ICA groups around the county are back in action and February is a month packed full with activities.

GOOD NEWS:-
Many guilds got new members this year and this is good news for the guilds and the organisation. If you have an increase in the numbers in your guild you should write to head office at 58 Merrion Road, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4 and you will get vouchers for attending An Grianán.

INVITATION:-
Limerick Federation ICA is invited to visit The European Parliament Offices in Dublin on Thursday Feb.23
A bus will leave the Crescent Shopping Centre at 7.30am to take members to Dublin.You will visit the European Parliament Offices and there will be a talk on current Irish/European affairs from 11.30 to 12.30 . This will be followed by lunch and then members are free to go shopping or sightseeing.The bus returns to Limerick later that evening. Once again the good news is –the trip is free compliments of the EU Offices.If you are interested ring or text Joan Hayes, Federation Secretary before Feb 17^th.

RANKS BAKING MEMORIES:-
Members are having lots of fun recalling their baking memories so now it is time to write them down and you can bring them along with any baking utensils you have collected to the Federation meeting on Feb21st.These items will be displayed in the Hunt Museum in March.

AN GRIANÁN:-
Limerick Week at An Grianán is booked for July 16 to 20^th and the following classes are available.
Watercolours ,Digital Photography, Hairpin Crochet, Fitness and Leisure, Pamper Me, Time for Yourself and Limerick Lace.
If you are interested in going please give your name to Helen Lane and Helen will collect €100 deposit at Federation Meeting .
This year a special bus will travel from Limerick to An Grianán and the cost is €30.

COMPETITIONS:-
Mary Moloney, Arts Officer is holding a painting competition at Federation Meeting on Feb21st
A Winter Garden Scene in acrylic-unmounted and not framed. Entries by Feb16th and you can bring painting along to meeting with €3 entry fee.
Gempack Recipe Competition
Dinner for a family of four to include a starter, main course and desert using as many Gem Pack products as possible. Send the recipes to Marie Hayes before Feb17th
The cakes will be judged at Federation Meeting.
Tivoli Make and Model Competition
All members entering this competition are asked to send their names to Marie Hayes before Feb17th.

COOKING WITH EDWARD HEYDEN:-
Limerick Federation are delighted to announce that Edward Heyden will be back again in the Woodlands with all new menues. The last demonstration was very successful so don’t miss out this very special night on Tuesday February 28^th Tickets are available from guild secretaries.

COMHBHRÓN:-
Condolences to Mary Sheehan and Nellie Cosgrove of Clarina guild on the death of their brother Tom Costello,also to the family of Nuala Hannon a member of Fedamore Guild who passed away recently. Sympathy is also extended to Stasia Walsh of Oola Guild on the death of her husband Martin. It was also with sadness that we heard of the deaths of Breda Fitzgerald ,a former member of Drombanna Guild and her husband RIP.

ACTIVITY DAYS:-
Kathleen Griffin, sports officer has two activity dayes planned for March. The first will be in Kilcornan on March 3^rd and the second will be in Doon on March 31^st.

RANKS FLOUR EXHIBITION:-
As a follow up to the invitation to ICA to take part in the Ranks Flour Exhibition which takes place in The Hunt Museum in March we now have a more specific account of the items needed. Members are asked to look out for any Ranks flour sacks, flour packaging, flour scoops, Ranks recipes cards/pamphlets ,meal-bins, Blue Cross Animal Feeds bags, Ranks advertising, baking tins and objects related to the broader theme of changes in homebaking practices since the 1940s/50s/60s.

COLLECTION OF HOMEBAKING MEMORIES:-
To tie in with the above event we are also asking members to write a short letter about your memories of your mother or grandmother baking. Was it always at a certain time of the week/day? Describe aspects such as the baking ingredients, rituals, sounds, smells, equipment, traditions, different baking practices for different times of the year. Where were these ingredients purchased? Did you help with the baking? Did you learn to bake by watching them or did they take you through the recipe step-by-step. What are the biggest changes between baking in your mother’s day and baking today? What in your opinion are the motivators of these changes.
All guilds should take part in this trip down memory lane and individuals or groups can send in submissions.

CRAFTS DISPLAY:-
All guilds are asked to keep working on their crafts as there will be a special craft competition at the 2012 Federation AGM. Guilds will be asked to display four or five different craft pieces made recently by present guild members. Crafts of all sorts are making a big comeback and ICA is always delighted to encourage this work. Many guilds have classes and demonstrations going on at present so we look forward to seeing all your work.

KILBEHENNY GUILD:-
Mary O Brien from Kilbehenny reports that they are back on track since Jan.10^th and they welcome new members. The Guild enjoyed a very good 2011 with many varied guests throughout the year thus enhancing the education of all members. The main fundraiser for the year was the annual Christmas Draw which again this year was a great success. They wish to thank everybody who supported the draw whether you bought a line or sponsored a prize-it was much appreciated.
At the December meeting on Dec13 Nellie Bailey wished everyone a happy, holy and peaceful Christmas. Following the tea served by Cissie Barrett the draw was held as all sat around with bated breath wondering would their names come out . The following are the lucky winners.

NATIONAL COMPETITIONS:
January is a good time for planning so this week we will have a look at the National ICA Competitions which take place over the next few months. One of the aims of ICA is that we should always try something new and by entering competitions we always push ourselves to do a little better and improve our knowledge and skills. Have a look at the upcoming competitions and discuss them with fellow guild members and try something new. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Uniforms will not gain extra marks.
Teams need not all be from same guild.
There will be a musician at the National Final to play for the sets.

Out of the entry fees for the table quiz we are asking federations to pay dinner and B&B for their winning team in An Grianán.
Information Pack will be forwarded to Federations in Early March 2012.
Tivoli Make and Model Competition
Theme: One Item to wear on a Spring Outing - Proof of Tivoli Wool Purchase is required at Federation and National Level.
The maker of the outfit must model it herself at Federation Final and at the National Final in An Grianán.
Names of Federation Winner to be submitted to Central Office by 27th February 2012.
Information Pack will be forwarded in Early March 2012
National Final will be held on 24th March at An Grianán

Kildimo ICA members who received their certificates in Computers and Health recently from Co Limerick VEC with tutor Liz Keane

“Christmas is coming and the goose is getting fat
Please put a penny in the old man’s hat
If you haven’t got a penny a halfpenny will do
If you haven’t got a halfpenny God Bless You.”
This is a very old and simple rhyme but it contains something of the essence of Christmas.
Christmas is a time for giving and we can all give a little even if it is only our time.
ICA ladies are taking a break from activities and devoting their time to family, neighbours and friends.
As we look back over a busy year we realise what a wonderful organisation ICA is. At guild level we find a great friendship has built up between members as they organise classes, competitions , guest speakers and days out. Not alone this but they often form a core group in the community and help out with many community events.
The network grows wider as we join in activities with Federation. During the year members made several trips to An Grianán so the circle grows wider and we make friends and exchange ideas with people from all over Ireland.
This year in Limerick we had a revival of Limerick Lace and two very successful classes were held. We held a wonderful art and craft display in Newcastlewest Library- Le Chéile 1. And the Kilultra Painters held another one recently .Sewing and Knitting made a big comeback with a Sewing Workshop in Ballingarry and a wonder full Tea Cosy Competition in Cappamore. Later on members put in a great effort knitting hats scarves and mittens for The Heart Foundation and Limerick Federation organised a volunteers day of knitting in the Milk Market in Limerick. This was followed up by a renew and recycle day with Pauline MacDonagh and Limerick Co. Council. The aim of this day was to repair and re design our old clothes and reduce waste.
In September ICA helped out at Milford Hospice Harvest Fair and Guilds in a spirit of generousity and co-operation collected and donated groceries and produce to fill the grocery stall. Later on the Federation organised a fun run and walk for breast cancer research in Galway. Along with this many guilds support many other charities with cake sales coffee morning and other events.
For those who like to travel two interesting trips abroad took place- one to Tuscany and the other to Devon and Cornwall.
Health and fitness is always important and walking is very popular. Classes in Pitch and Putt were held in Adare and Activity Days are held on request.
Halloween Lunch was held in the Woodlands and most guilds hold their own Christmas Party so there is no shortage of social events. If anyone is interested in joining the organisation they are always welcome.
Hope you all have a happy and peaceful Christmas and remember to put a candle in the window as a sign of welcome to the passer by. Nollaig faoi shéan agus faoi mhaise dhaoibh.

COUNTY QUIZ WINNERS:
Oola were the winners of Limerick Federation ICA Quiz and the team members were Nora Stapleton ,Mary O Byrne, Teresa Bowles and Marie English. In second place were Cappamore members ,Breege Mc Namara, Anne Flynn, Nancy Ryan and Phyllis Ryan. Marie Hayes, competition secretary was pleased with the good attendance on the night and all will earn valuable points for the guild of the year competition.
AN GRIANÁN:
The Ladies who travelled to An Grianán had a very productive two days. Some did Christmas wreathes and decorated logs while others did cooking with fruit cakes, soups ,stuffed turkey breasts and seasonal mince pies all on the menu. The final group avoided all thechores and opted for aromatherapy which was just what the doctor ordered.
They also tried out the new beauty saloon and gave a very positive report. So now if you are looking for a special Christmas gift why not get a few vouchers for An Grianán ? As well as that 2012 is The Year Of An Grianán so lots of members will be going there and non members are also welcome.
COMHBHRÓN:
It was with sadness that we heard of the death of Mary Ellen Lyons RIP, a long time member of Clarina guild.
LACEMAKERS:
On November 30^th the lacemakers of Limerick Federation finished a ten week course on Limerick lace given by Marian O Callaghan. This was a follow up to the course held in the summer and even though the work is very detailed and slow everyone completed a piece which thy will proudly display in their homes. The next lace course will be held in An Grianán during Limerick Week in July 2012. Marian will also teach some other crafts at the craft day on March 12^th. So if you are interested give your names to Carol O Keeffe, Craft Officer.
AROUND THE GUILDS:
Mainistir Na Féile
The members of Mainistir Na Féile guild are having a well deserved night out with Christmas Dinner in Leens Hotel on Dec13.The had a busy autumn programme with eight weeks of cookery with Karen O Shaughnessey and a Dance and Exercise class with Lisa Cahill. Both of these courses were supported by Limerick VEC and they plan to run A Go For Life exercise class in the new year so if you live in Abbeyfealed go along and join them.
Caisleán Nua
This is a newly formed guild and they are working on the principle of “tosach maith leath na h-oibre”.In November their guest was a Polish girl living in Newcastlewest and she gave a class in ribbon work.At the December meeting one of their own members gave a demonstration on Flower arranging. In the New year they plan to finish a class in contemporary embroidery and in February their guest will be a beautician.This will be an open meeting so if you are interested in joining them contact 087 649511. Their Secretary Rose Mc Carthy also tells me that they are having their Christmas night out in The Market Brasserie so well done to all.
Morroe/Boher
The members of Murroe/Boher guild had their Christmas night out in Crokers on Dec. 6 and they were privileged to have Federation President Ann Gabbett as their guest on this occasion. A great crowd attended and The Craft Group put on a lovely display of their work on the night. A table quiz was organised by Ann Quinlivan and K Wilizus. Ann Gabbett presented Breda Fitzpatrick with a beautiful Colm De Ris bowl which she won in the National Volunteering Competition. Ann Gabbett also tells us that Noreen Lorigan of Morroe was a former Federation President and she later went on to become Matron of The Horticultural College at An Grianán. The night ended with finger food Christmas treats and drinks.

CHILDRENS ISSUES
At the November Federation Meeting Phyllis O Halloran, Vice President gave a report on the meeting of Federation Presidents held at An Grianán. Frances Fitzgerald, Minister for Children was guest speaker and she talked on the upcoming referendum on Children’s Issues. It is advisable that all guilds would give some time to discussing this subject so that we can all educate ourselves on the issues involved.
HEALTHY EATING
If you feel like doing something new with your vegetables this Christmas, why not try roasting them.
Here is a nice recipe for you from An Bord Glas.
Roasted Vegetables and Potatoes
Preparation Time: 15 mins Cooking Time 1hr 30mins
Ingredients
1 tblsp pure vegetable oil (preferably olive oil for its flavour)
1sprig of fresh rosemary, chopped or 1tsp. dried rosemary
2-3 cloves of garlic, peeled and finely chopped
2large onions, sliced
240grms carrots, chopped
2 courgettes, sliced (optional)
1.5 kg potatoes, peeled
1 tblsp. Plain flour
A little salt and freshly ground black pepper
½ medium-sized red pepper (sliced)
Method
Mix together one tablespoon of oil with two tablespoons of water, the rosemary and garlic. Use a little of this mixture to grease a large roasting tin and rub the rest of the oil on the vegetables except the pepper.
Layer all the vegetables, in a large rosting dish in the following order: the onions, the carrots, courgettes and potatoes. Season with salt and black pepper.
Bake at 200C/400F?Gas Mark6 for one and a quarter hours.
Spread the sliced red pepper on top and continue cooking for about 15 mins. More, or until the vegetables are tender. If you wish sprinkle with chopped parsley before serving.

It was with great sadness that we all received the news of Mary O Brien’s death. Mary from Fortmiddle , Colemanswell was secretary of Ballyagran Guild and we wish to extend condolences to her husband James and her family and all her friends in ICA as well as the wider Community. Originally from Annagh, Morroe, Mary moved to Colemanswell and played a big part in Ballyagran ICA where she took many officerships and also served as PRO for Co. Limerick. PRESIDENTS REPORT
At the recent Federation Meeting, The President, Anne Gabbett welcomed all the members and especially the new members who were attending their first Federation Meeting. Anne was delighted to report that membership numbers in Limerick were up as many guilds have new members and we hope they participate and enjoy all ICA activities.
She thanked all those who took part in The Sewing Bootcamp and said that it was a very good public relations day for ICA. Anne also thanked the knitters, who handed in Hats Scarves and Wrist-warmers for the heart foundation. Thanks to the great generosity of ICA members this venture was a great success.
A lot of classes are being run by ICA guilds around the county with Mainistir Na Féile, Feenagh and Kildimo holding classes supported by Co. Limerick VEC Community Education Service.
Anne was happy to announce that Chef, Edward Hayden will be back in Limerick on February 28^th with a whole new menu. Tickets will be sent out to guilds soon.
TABLE ARRANGEMENT
The standard in the flower arranging competition was excellent and the winners were 1^st Shelia O Riordan, Caherdavin 2^nd Carmel Breen, Oola 3^rd Mary Condon Fedamore and Highly Commended, Mary Beary, Oola.

GUILD OF THE YEAR
Marie Hayes wishes to remind all guilds who are taking part in the guild of the year competition to keep recording all activities meetings classes and competitions. If you are not sure about an event you are advised to put it in anyway and it can be sorted out during judging.
CRAFT DAY
Carol O Keeffe , craft officer will be holding A Craft Day on the second Saturday of March 2012. It will cover Crochet, Quilling and Trapunto (Italian Quilting). If you are interested contact Carol at 0879721440. The venue will be decided later.
PAINTING COMPETITION.
Mary Moloney, arts officer will have a painting competition at The Spring Federation Meeting on Feb21st. You are asked to paint A Winter Garden Scene In Acryllic and it must be unmounted and any size.
CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS
Opportunity for aspiring actors,storytellers and performers to participate in a family orientated interactive performance event being held in The Hunt Museum Limerick.
The event is being held on Sat. Dec.10 from 1 – 4.30 pm
Participants will be asked to perform the roles of various historical characters for 3 short storytelling and interactive intervals. Costumes and props are provided.

To Galbally Guild who are celebrating 65 years of ICA and Kildimo Guild who are celebrating 30 years of ICA we extend our good wishes and best of luck for the future.
AROUND THE GUILDS
Castleconnell guild held their International Night in November and it was a very informative occasion when a young man from Georgia was their guest. He told them that he came her to do farm work and he did not ha a word of English. The farmer encouraged him to do classes and now he speaks fluently and was able to tell the all about the country he came from as well as his experiences here.
Caherdavin are off to The GreenHills Hotel for their Christmas Party.
Lierick City Guild held a coffee morning for The Simon Community and the would like to thank the members and the neighbouring guilds who supported them. A very generous cheque was presented to The Simon Community.

WASTE NOT WANT NOT
As part of European Week for Waste Reduction organised by The Regional Waste Management Office for Limerick, Clare and Kerry Limerick ICA held a stitch in time bootcamp with practical demonstrations on how to make clothes last longer. Every person in Ireland generates 27kgs of textile waste each year. Preventing some or all of this is good for the environment.
The day was a great success with all age groups taking an interest from age 11 up to our senior citizens sharing and learning skills on the day. There was information on the use of the sewing machine and all the skills from sewing a button to taking up a hem and other simple repairs. The Mayor of Limerick, James Long and The Cathaoirleach of Limerick Co. Council, Mary Harty as well as Councillor P.J. Ryan of Clare called in to give support and encouragement to the project.
On the same day Transition Year Eco- Ambassadors from Crescent College Comprehensive launched a new web page “Eco pledge-I made it”. They hope to raise awareness and change our behaviour by challenging people to make a simple Eco Pledge and stick to it. The pledges are simple, easy to achieve actions such as Saying No to Junk Mail, Using a Shopping list to Prevent Food Waste or Choosing Tap Water. We wish them every success.

AROUND THE GUILDS
Congratulations to Galbally guild who are celebrating 65yrs of ICA on Saturday Nov26 in The Local Community Hall. They are one of the oldest Guilds in the Federation and play a very active part in their community so we wish them many more years of enjoyment and success.
Kildimo.
The Killultra ICA Painters of Kildimo are mounting an exhibition entitled Obair Na mBan a dódhéag on Friday Nov25th at 3.30 pm in Newcastlewest Library. These very talented ladies have produced many fine works of art so I recommend you all go along to view their work and you may pick up some nice original piece as a Christmas gift. The paintings will hang for a week
Castlemahon guild are Cooking with Deirdre Doody and sampling jams,chutneys and preserves with Eileen O Sullivan
Broadford Ladies are off to Cork City on a shopping trip and visiting Dripsey Garden Centre on the way On Dec10th they are going for a Christmas meal at The Corbett Court.

UPCYCLING BOOTCAMP
If you are interested in sewing then go along to the Ormstons Stores on Patrick’s Street in Limerick on Saturday Nov19 anytime from 2 to 5pm. Due to a bereavement in Doon the Mass scheduled for Nov 10^th was cancelled. RENEW AND RECYCLE

HALLOWEEN LUNCH SUCCESS
The Limerick Federation Halloween Lunch was a very pleasant event with over ninety ladies from guilds all over the county in attendance. The tasty meal was followed by an impromptu session of songs and recitations and as usual a few jokes to keep the laughter alive. The winners of the raffle were Marie Hayes Cappamore, Ellen Hennessey Kildimo, Mary Kenny Caherdavin, Cathy Farrissey Feenagh, Betty Flemming Cappamore, Ann Brosnan Broadford, Celest Bartley Oola and Ann Kennedy Caherdavin. Anne Gabbett , The President, thanked all for attending and praised the good work being done by officers and guild members throughout the county.
VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR
Congratulations to Ina Howell of Grenagh Guild in Co. Cork who was chosen National Volunteer of the Year at The Final which was held in Galway on Nov. 4 The event was sponsored by One Direct Insurance and the overall winner along with the regional winners were presented with a beautiful piece of pottery ,designed by Colm De Ris. This event was followed on Nov 5 by The Regional ICA Conference which was held in The Galway Bay Hotel. The Limerick Federation President and Secretary and a numberof members attended.

Anne Rowlands, Caherdavin Guild who is the incoming Teachta is just back from a course for Teachtaí which was held at An Grianán. She came back full of enthusiasm and praise for all the improvements which have been put in place in recent years. A series of Christmas Dinners will be held at AN Grianán on Dec6th 7^th and8th. VALUE FOR MONEY
The best way to get value out of ICA membership is by taking part in the activities at both guild and federation level.
The Sports Activity Day held in Cappamore recently was very successful. Twenty two members attended and Kathleen Griffin,sport and leisure officer will be delighted to organise a few more activity days if guilds are willing to host them.

WOMEN IN AGRICULTURE

It was good to meet so many ICA ladies at The Women in Agriculture Conference 2011 held in The Lyrath Hotel Kilkenny on Oct 24. This meeting stressed the importance of agriculture in our economy with particular reference to the part played by women in all aspects of the food industry. Many speakers emphasised the importance of producing and cooking good wholesome home produced food. This may be the right time to have a new look at the role of Federation Produce Promoters as well as Guild Produce Promoters.

EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT TOUR
A group of fifty people travelled to Brussels and the Rhineland with Phil Prendergast in early October. Pauline Power from Feenagh Guild Sheila Roche from Kilmeedy Guild and their friends Maura Kenny, Margaret O Donnell, and Catherine Kelly travelled with the group. Rhona Danaher from Mainister Na Féile guild and her husband also travelled.They had a wonderful trip and Pauline had a nice surprise on Monday evening when they were met by her son Peter who works in Brussels
On Tuesday they went to Parliament Buildings and they had an appointment with Phil Prendergast MEP. They were shown slides and had talks on the workings of the parliament. Sean Kelly MEP also met with the group .Phil Prendergast gave a very interesting talk on her life and work.She told them that she spent twenty five in Clonmel as a midwife so she is obviously a good peoples person. The evening meal that night was hosted by Phil in an Irish Restaurant and believe it or not the chef was an Irish girl, Mags Daly from Mallow in Co. Cork. Mags came out to chat to the group and told them she went over for a weekend and decided to stay.
Next day the group visited Maastricht where they did some shopping and had lunch. Then it was on to Cologne where they had a guided walking tour and they visited the beautiful Cologne Cathedral.
On Friday they went for a trip along the Rhine/Moselle area stopping in Rudesheim for a boat trip and then on to Dusseldorf for the flight home.
The tour was organised by John Moran EU Tours Laois and there will be a short tour to Brussels and Bruges at the end of November. If you are interested contact John Moran at 0599145176.

Maureen Sheehan of Castletroy Guild tells us that they have moved to a new venue. It is Monaleen GAA Club House right in the heart of the community. Congratulations to Mary O Gorman and Mary O leary who won prizes at Cappamore and Limerick Shows. ‘Castletroy Craft Mornings are up and running on the 2^nd and 4^th Thursday of every Month. They meet from 10.am -12 noon in Monaleen laptops from Santa are in big demand. Members visited Limerick’s oldest guild Limerick TA and a big thank you to Ann Harrington and Ann McLoughlin for a great night. The Book Club meets on the first Tuesday of each month and members also play cards and attend Limerick Lace. If you live in the area they are well worth joining them.

FEDERATION MEETING
Limerick Federation Autumn Meeting was buzzing with activity on Sept. 27^th when ICA members from all corners of the county came together to review summer activities and make plans for the months ahead. Letters of thanks from An Grianán , Milford Hospice and The Breast Cancer Research Centre in Galway all show how much the work done by ICA is appreciated. €2386 was collected at The Grocery Stall at Milford Hospice Harvest Fair and the final contributions have still to be added in so well done to all. Limerick City Guild also ran the plant stall and collected over a thousand euro so well done to them also.
The aroma of freshly baked scones filled the air as there were seventy one entries in the white scones competition. The winners were 1^st Joan O Connell, Feenagh 2^nd Frankie Campbell, Cappamore and 3^rd Mary Beary, Oola. The Handwriting Competition was well supported with forty entries and the winners here were 1^st Betty Roche, Mungret St Pauls 2^nd Marie Enright, Oola 3^rd Patricia Cronin, Feenagh and 4^th Anne Maria Collins Crecora.
Helen Lane is taking names for the trip to An Grianán Nov. 22^nd to 24^th. The classes will include Christmas Baking ,Flowers and Decorations so you will all come back with lots of new ideas.
Helen also reminds us that vouchers for An Grianán are available and would make very nice presents for family and friends.
The Biddy Mullane Trophy for craft was presented to Anne Flynn, Cappamore for her knitted tea cosy.

MILK MARKET
There was lively banter and ‘craic’ in The ICA Stand in the Milk Market on National Volunteering Day Sept.30^th . ICA ladies from Mungret St. Pauls , Crecora, Grange, Cappamore, Murroe Boher , Feenagh, Castlemahon, Ballingarry, Castletroy and Drombanna were all knitting for The Irish Heart Foundation. They were also joined by some prospective members and we look forward to having them in the organisation. Ann O Riordan from The Heart Foundation joined in on the knitting and the fun and we also thank those who gave contributions on the day.
The Milk Market in Limerick is a most interesting place and well worth a visit. They were most helpful and welcoming on the day and Niall O Keeffe , the web designer for the market had a picture of the knitters on the web site before evening.

Best Wishes to Celeste Bartley of Oola Guild who celebrated her 90^th Birthday recently. Celeste was at the September Federation meeting and still plays an active role in ICA .

Castleconnell Guild members are off to An Grianán for a week .
Murroe /Boher guild are doing crafts with Maureen Kenny and Margaret Rabbitte. If you are interested in knitting or crochet go along to the hall in Murroe on Tuesday evenings. They went to the Ploughing and were delighted to meet Imelda in the ICA stand. Their Members are knitting for The Heart Foundation and they also have an Age Action group going.
SPORTS AND LEISURE
Kathleen Griffin tells us that a walking group has started on Wednesday evenings starting at two o clock. The first walk is in Curraghchase on Oct. 5^th and you can contact Kathleen for more details.

Condolences are extended to Phyllis O Halloran on the death of her aunt, Sr. Bridget o Shaughnessy.
Sr. Bridget was a native of Kildimo and she often attended ICA events with Phyllis when she was on holidays.

HALLOWEEN LUNCH
Monday October 31^st is the day when all ICA ladies in Co Limerick will take a day off from the kitchen and go out to lunch. Limerick Federation are organising a Halloween Lunch at The Woodlands in Adare at 12.30. This year it is an all in package of a four course lunch and raffle ticket for €25 .All guilds should make a special effort to come along as it is a great opportunity to meet up with members from other guilds as well as catching up with old friends .Guild secretaries are asked to send in numbers of people attending to Mary Blackwel l before Wed. KNITTING
All those who have already completed the hats scarves and mittens for The Irish Heart Foundation are asked to let their guild secretaries know and pass them on to Anne Gabbett as soon as possible. Anne will get them to Central Office to be prepared for sale .The special wool is available from federation or central office and the patterns were sent out to guild secretaries or they are also available in this week’s Woman’s Way. The pattern is not difficult and you will enjoy the knitting. Don’t forget the Knit-A-Thon on Friday Sept. 30^th. LIMERICK LACE.
The Limerick Lace class with tutor Marian O Callaghan begins on Wed Sept 28^th. It is great to see a revival of this craft and Craft Officer Carol O Keeffe is delighted with the interest shown by Limerick ICA. This class will include beginners and improvers and we hope some pieces will go on display later in the year.

BROADFORD NEWS.
Broadford ICA ladies were back in action with a bang . At their September meeting the guest, Aoife Greaney from the Beauty Salon in Drom., gave a talk entitled “It’s all about you”. This presentation also included a demonstration on how to apply make up to enhance our natural beauty. They are planning a surprise shopping trip for Nov 19^th and their October meeting promises to be a great evening of fashion and fun with a bumper raffle. Lynn Montague PRO tells us that it is an evening for the discerning woman who has an interest in looking good for a fair price. Liz’s daughter is in Belarus at the Adult Institute with a working party so we await her return for news and photos. The first round of blankets and warm clothing was delivered and Liz is continuing to collect and knit squares for this worthy cause.

SPORTS AND LEISURE
Kathleen Griffin and the “pitch and putt” team represented Limerick at the finals at an Grianán. They had a great weekend and they stayed in The Sanctuary as An Grianán was full. Co. Meath had the winning team but the Limerick Ladies did us proud and we say well done to all. Many ICA members are involved in walking groups and we hope you will all be out on National Trails Day Sun Oct. 2^nd .Watch out for the walks near you.

PLOUGHING
The ICA tent in Athy was a hive of activity. People were coming and going all day. Limerick Federation President Anne Gabbett ,National President Anne Maria Dennison and National Secretary Liz Wall spent some time at the stand and there were lots of enquiries about ICA activities. Kildare Federation had a tremendous display of crafts and there were workshops and demonstrations all during the day. These included Knitting, Card Making, Crochet and Embroidery (stump work, wool embroidery and chicken scratching which is embroidery on gingham) Anne was very impressed by the work put in by the Kildare Members under President Nora Mc. Dermott. There was still a big interest in Bootcamp with queues of young people wanting their photo taken with Imelda, Josephine and Marie.

COOKERY BOOK
National ICA is planning a cookery book for 2012. Lots of members have family recipes handed down from mothers and grandmothers so look them up and keep them in a safe place. It will be lovely to have them all in the book.

The knitting needles are busy all over the country. ICA ladies and their friends are busy knitting hats scarves and wrist warmers in support of the Heart Foundation. If you haven’t started yet then now is the time to get going. Knitting is fun so spread the news around and get everyone involved. Get in touch with the schools in your area, arrange a public knit-a-thon, knit at your local library and get the whole community involved. September30th is National Volunteer Knit-a-thon day and Limerick Federation has organised a special knitting event at the Milk Market in Limerick from 11am to 4pm approx.

Sunshine blue sky and blue sea greeted the ICA ladies as they reached their destination near Plymouth in the South of England. Their hotel situated on the verge of Dartmoor National Park was comfortable and welcoming . This is the territory of The Duke and Duchess of Cornwall better known as Prince Charles and Camilla.
Day one took them on a visit to the lovely city of Exeter with its famous Cathedral. Here they had a guided tour and some shopping time in the afternoon. They also visited Paighton with its unusual beach huts and the lovely old fashioned town of Torquay.
Next day they travelled to St Ives and took the ten minute train trip into this pretty fishing village. The beaches around it were beautiful and the temperature 30 degrees so their stay was all too short. On the way they stopped in Corbis Bay and were treated to Cornish Cream Tea in the Corbis Bay Hotel. Penzance famous for The Pirates and the old world village of Mousehole were all included in the trip.
Thursday was the final day and they went to visit The Eden Project . The site was an old Cornwall clay pit and it was developed into the world famous gardens by Tim Smit .It has the largest green house in the world with one glass house devoted to a rain forest.
As they packed their bags for home all were talking of a return visit.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY CRECORA
Crecora ICA celebrates its fortieth birthday this year and Elizabeth Lahiff tells us that the celebrations start with An Ecumenical Service on Thursday September 29^th. The Service will be held in Crecora Church at 8pm and refreshments will be served afterwards in the club house. All members, past members and families of deceased members are welcome.

All roads lead to Athy this week for The National Ploughing Championships. The ICA stand will be a busy place all during the three days with many workshops and presentations. These include Flower Arranging (Hey-Day Flowers), Hats by Imelda Byrne, Art with Fiona Marron, Farm Safety by Martin O Halloran, Vintage Bags by Mary Connan, Gardening by Yvonne O Connor and Women’s Way Presentation. Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness

Autumn is the time for harvesting and storing the produce from the garden. With the increase in new gardens and allotments many people are wondering how to preserve extra fruit and vegetables. Jams and jellies and juices are the usual way to preserve fruit and you can make lovely chutneys from vegetables .If you end up with lots of green tomatoes this is a good recipe for

GREEN TOMATO CHUTNEY.

4lbs green tomatoes

3lbs apples

½ lb shallots

1lb sultanas

4red chillies

½ lb sugar

3pints vinegar

1oz salt

¼ oz ginger bruised

½ teasp. White peppercorns

Put the sugar, vinegar and salt into a saucepan, add the ginger, peppercorns and chillies tied in muslin. Heat slowly until the sugar is dissolved, boil for about ¾ hour. Add the chopped tomato ,apple and shallots and the cleaned sultanas. Simmer gently, stirring occasionally until the mixture is of a thick consistency. Remove spices tied in muslin. Pour into sterilized jars and cover.

TRAVELLERS TALES

Breda Gantley and a group of fourteen ICA ladies are just back from a holiday in Tuscany on the west coast of Italy. They did day trips to Florence, Pisa, Lucca and Siena. They visited Historical Buildings, Churches, Museums and the famous artworks .Another trip took them to Five Villages along the coast. The weather was very hot and the evenings were spent outside sipping wine and dining in pleasant Mediterranean restaurants.

We say bon voyage to all those travelling to Devon and Cornwall and hope they escape the rough seas.

40^TH ANNIVERSARY

Elizabeth Lahiff tells us that Crecora ICA guild is celebrating forty years of ICA this year. The Guilds 40^th Anniversary Celebration starts with an Ecumenical Service on Thursday September 29^th in Crecora Church at 8pm. Members, past members and family of deceased members are all welcome. Refreshments will be served in the club house after the service.Go néirí go geal libh as seo amach.

KNIT-A-THON

The patterns for hat, scarf and wrist warmers with heart design have been sent out to all guilds. Many members are already knitting so we hope a lot more will join in and to help out a special easy to knit pattern is included for beginners. All will be ready for Friday September 30^th which is National Volunteer Knit-a-thon Day. The spirit of volunteering is alive and well in Feenagh Guild. When the guild met after the summer break five blankets for The Puchavichi Adult Institute in Belarus were ready to be sewn up.

Once again we look forward to one of the big social events of the year when all the guilds of county Limerick come together for a Halloween Lunch. The date is fixed for Monday October 31^st at 12.30 pm in The Woodlands House Hotel, Adare. The tickets are €25 each and this includes a raffle. Guilds are asked to send numbers of people attending to Mary Blackwell before Wednesday October 26^th.
The Afternoon Dance organised by the hotel is optional and there is a separate admission charge .

As part of the Knitting promotion by ICA nationwide Limerick Federation are running a Knit-a- thon on Friday Sept 30^th at The Milk Market, Limerick from 11 am to 4pm approx.. We hope all you knitters will join in .Guilds can also arrange a Knit-a-thon in their own local area.
We also remind members knitting for the Heart Foundation that wool and patterns will be available at the Federation Meeting Sept.27^th. This is a National effort to highlight the importance of volunteering which is so vital for development of community. THE ENORMOUS COURGETTE
Agnes Collins of Castleconnell guild came up with a new idea for fundraising in the ICA camp at the Harvest Fair . The challenge was guess the weight of the courgette . People lifted it ,measured it looked at it and even went away for a while to think about it . In the end eight people drew for first place and the winner was Noreen Butler , Pallasgreen and the actual weight was 8lbs 15ozs.
Agnes who is a very good gardener grew the courgette in her own garden so well done to all.
FUNDRAISING
This year Limerick Federation ICA collected €5130.85 for Breast cancer research in Galway and Clarina Guild are to be commended on the great effort they put in and the wonderful contributions they made to this worthy cause.

KNITTING FOR THE HEART FOUNDATION
Knitting is”cool” at the moment so do join in the fun. ICA ladies all over the country will be knitting hats and scarves for the Irish Heart Foundation but you must use the special wool and patterns . All details are with the guild secretaries.
CAPPAMORE SHOW
One of the highlights of the year in east Limerick is the Cappamore Show and the ICA ladies played their part with two cookery sessions given by Edward Hayden and two sessions of flower arranging given by Carol O Keeffe and a demonstration of buttermaking by Breda Mc Donald former ICA Bootcamp mentor.
The winners of the craft competition were 1^st Anne O Flynn Cappamore Guild- Anne won The Biddy Mullane Trophy , 2^nd Marie O Leary Castletroy Guild and 3^rd Maura Hallam Kildimo Guild.
The standard was high and competition was keen in all competitions and Mary Blackwell Cappamore picked up prizes for a Thank You Card Two heads of Cabbage and Rock buns while Agnes Collins got a first for her scones. Well done to all who took part.
HARVEST FAIR

HOLIDAY TIMES
Now that most ICA guilds are on holidays, I thought I would share a little story with you on taking time out. It was passed onto me by an ICA friend and it is called ‘Two Glasses of Wine: A Good Philosophy.’
When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar and the two glasses of wine…
A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly, he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls.
He then asked the students if the jar was then full. They agreed that it was.
The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.
The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with a unanimous ‘Yes’. The professor next produced two glasses of wine from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar, effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed.
‘Now’, said the professor, as the laughter subsided ‘I want you to recognise that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things; your family, your children, your health, your friends and your favourite passions; things that if everything else was lost and only they remained your life would still be full.
The pebbles are the other things that matter, like your job, your house and your car.
The sand is everything else; the small stuff.
If you put the sand into the jar first’ he continued, ‘there is no room for the pebbles and the golf balls. The same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff you will never have the room for the things that are important to you.
Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness.
Play with your children, take time to get the medical check-ups, take your partner out to dinner and play another 18. There will always be time to clean the house and do the laundry. Take care of the golf balls first, the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.’
One of the students raised her hand and enquired what the wine represented.
The professor smiled. ‘I’m glad you asked. It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem there is always room for a couple of glasses of wine with a friend.’

PITCH AND PUTT
Details for Pitch and Putt competition which will be held on September 24^th at Seapoint Pitch and Putt club.
There will be four members per team and the competition will start at 11am. All teams are asked to be present at 10.30 am to register. Submit entries to Liz Wall at Central Office giving names of competitors. Entry fee is €40 per team, and the cost of lunch is €50 per team. Further details from Kathleen Griffen, Sports Officer.

MILFORD HOSPICE
Groceries should be put in a box and marked with the name of the guild. They can be handed in at Milford any time this week or you can bring them on the day. Help is needed on the day to organise and run the stall so if you are available ring Anne Gabbett or Joan Hayes and give them your name and the time when you can help out.

TRAVEL REMINDER
This reminder is for all those travelling to Devon and Cornwall on September 12^th. The final payments for this trip must be with Breda Gantley before August 12^th. The tour is now full and there are no more places available. It is a very popular trip and there are forty seven people travelling.
We also wish the group of ladies travelling to Tuscany well and hope they enjoy their holiday.

HARVEST FAIR
Groceries; non-perishable goods along with jams, jellies, chutneys and garden produce are all needed for the grocery stall at Milford Hospice Harvest Fair. Guilds can leave these goods into Milford Hospice any time from now on as there are containers there for storing the goods. Put them in boxes marked with name of your guild.

TEA COSIES
All tea cosies for the competition in Cappamore need to be finished soon and make sure you get them in to Marie Hayes, competition secretary on or before August 19^th along with €3 entry fee.

AUTUMN CLASSES
Regina Duane, co-ordinator of Community Education with Co. Limerick VEC reminds us that all applications for funding must be in before August 31^st. Application forms are available on www.limerickvec.ie. This is a valuable source of funding for ICA Guilds and we would like to hear from guilds that got funding over the past years. It is always good to hear the success stories of other guilds when members developed new talents and learned new skills.

COMHBHRÓN
Condolences are extended to Breda Gantley of Caherdavin Guild on the death of her sister Marie Mackey who was buried recently in Paulstown, Co. Kilkenney.

FARM SAFETY
Once again we appeal to all ICA members to warn all those working on farms and visiting farms of the dangers associated with farm work. People operating farm machinery need to be vigilant at all times.

AROUND THE GUILDS
Congratulations to Bridie Dunne of Ballingarry Guild whose grandson Barry McGrath was the recipient of an award for bravery as he saved three people on the one day.
Kildimo Guild celebrated their 30^th Birthday with a trip to Caiseal Na Mumhan. As the Shannonsiders travelled inland they recalled the great network of friends they have built up in the guilds of East Limerick. Places such as Boher, Pallasgreen, Dromkeen, Oola and of course Ballyneety, Drombana, Caherconlish and Cappamore were all familiar to them. In the distance was Sliabh Na mBan where the first ICA summer school was held under canvas and Fethard the birthplace of country markets.
Fine dining at Café Hans set the scene for the day and then it was time to visit the famed Rock of Cashel, the seat of the Kings of Munster and St Cormac’s Chapel which is regarded as the greatest example of Romanesque architecture in the country. The guided tour gave a good insight into its history from pre-Christian times and as the day drew to a close Phyllis and friends headed back to Cois Maighe with plans to revisit another time.

LIMERICK LACE
The first pieces of Limerick Lace are now finished and the ladies of Limerick ICA are delighted with their achievement. A special word of thanks goes to our tutor Marian O Callaghan for her patience and dedication and also the staff of The Dunraven Arms Hotel who were most courteous at all times. The interest in lace is growing all the time and it is hoped to start two more classes in September.

The deVere Connection.
In the early 1880s there was a big revival in the making of Limerick lace partly because the Good Shepherd Nuns had switched to making it, but mainly due to the efforts of Mrs Robert Vere O’Brien.
Florence along with her husband, Robert Vere O’Brien arrived in Limerick in 1883. She was very artistic and had studied drawing in London. She immediately took an interest in the Limerick lace-makers she encountered in Limerick railway station. She knew that better materials and good designs would improve the quality of the finished work. She was supported by her husband’s aunt, Lady de Vere of Curragh Chase. In 1893 she set up her own Limerick Lace School. We also know that she was associated with the Convent of Mercy In Kinsale which had one of the earliest centres outside Limerick. All the information on her life and work is recorded by her grand-daughter, Veronica Rowe in the book entitled Limerick Lace .

THE BIDDY MULLANE TROPHY
The late Biddy Mullane RIP was a life long member of Adare guild. Her family presented a trophy to Limerick Federation to remember her great interest in all ICA activities particularly crafts. This year the trophy will be presented for A Tea Cosy in any medium and the competition takes place at Cappamore Show August 20^th.

Míle Buíochas
Mary Moloney Federation Arts Officer thanks everybody involved with the exhibition in Newcastlewest Library. The Exhibition was o grear success with over seventy entries from twelve guilds. Plans are in place for next years exhibition already.

Tribute
Anne Maria Dennison pays tribute to Gwen Carter RIP for the wonderful work she did for ICA and also for he friendship, loyalty and support at all times. She will be sadly missed.

‘LE CHÉILE 1 EXHIBITION
Creativity at its best was what we had in Newcastlewest Library last Tuesday evening with the official opening of the ICA art and craft exhibition. Aileen Dillane, Librarian , expressed delight at having such a very fine exhibition and congratulated everyone involved. Anne Gabbett, Federation President said the pieces on display were a representation of the whole variety of work women in ICA can do. She went on to say that ICA has a long tradition of preserving craft work in this country and hopes that this will continue long into the future. Art and craft in all its forms is a way of expressing beauty and most guilds run classes during the year. As well as this members have the opportunity of going to An Grianán to perfect their skills. The recently opened museum has a wonderful collection of laces and crochet. Mary Moloney , Arts Officer thanked Aileen and Pat from the library for their help in organising the exhibition, Caisleán Nua guild for doing the catering and Phyllis O Halloran for her help and advice. The display includes painting, acrylic, oil, and watercolour, needlework, embroidery, textile work, decoupage, batik, tapestry and glass painting so if you are passing by do pop in and have a look. The Library staff Aileen Dillane, Mary Cronin, Sheila O Sullivan, and Pat Galvin will have a céad mile fáilte for you and the exhibition continues until July 29^th.

CAISLEÁN NUA
Well done to Tanith O Brien and her fellow members who put on “rogha gach an bia agus togha gach an dí “ on Tuesday evening. The ladies from Newcastlewest supplied tea and coffee, scrumptious savouries and delicious cakes which were enjoyed by all. COMMUNITY EDUCATION
Regina Duane of Co. Limerick VEC is in charge of the Community Education Section. Each year the VEC gives funding for classes run by ICA guilds. Regina encourages all guilds to put in application forms for 2011-2012 classes before August 31^st.Application forms are available onwww.limerickvec.ie
FLOWERS FOR ALL OCCASIONS
Anna Costello and Julie Ryan of Glin ICA Guild came back from An Grianán with a display of colour and beauty. They brought back some beautiful flower arrangements which they made in class while
refreshed after their week of Yoga and recommend it for all guilds for the Autumn and Winter Months. The calligraphy artists Eileen O’ Byrne, Anne Mc Namara, Oola, Irene Weir, Mary Butler, and Rene Barrett, Castlemahon learned many new and intricate skills and if you really want a treat go to the “Pamper Me” class. A speedy recovery is wished to Bridie O Donnell of Mainistir Na Féile and Annette Long of Limerick City who missed this year’s trip.

AROUND THE GUILDS
Fedamore ICA under newly elected president Ann O Donnell enjoyed a lovely night out at Clancy’s Restaurant Bruff . During the months of May and June they had eight craft nights in Tapestry and Quilling given by Deirdre Coleman and sponsored by the Co. Limerick VEC. On their annual outing they visited Blarney, Kinsale and Cork and they will be back in action on Sept. 13^th with a demonstration by Boots. They wish to remind all members to give their goods for The Harvest Fair to Noreen O Keeffe before Aug 20^th.
Congratulations to Feenagh Kilmeedy guilds on winning the quiz at Limerick Week in An Grianán .The team were Mary Canty, Pauline Power, Bridie Madigan and Margaret O Donnell.

It was with shock and sadness that all ICA members heard of the untimely death of Gwen Carter RIP. of Raharney, Co Westmeath. Gwen was National Treasurer and did a lot of very good work for the organisation.

The words from the poem A Lament for Thomas Mc Donagh by Francis Ledwidge were recalled by the Limerick ICA ladies as they visited the home of the poet in Slane co. Meath. They were taking part in the Historic Homes course during Limerick Week at An Grianán .Five members from Feenagh and Kilmeedy Guilds, Pauline Power ,Anne O Callaghan, Kathleen Gayer, Bridie Madigan and Mary Canty were delighted with this course given by John Mc Cullen,writer historian and farmer.

On the first day they visited Rossnaree House which is in the townland of Rosnaree on the south side of the River Boyne in the historic bend of the river and with a spectacular view of the World Heritage site at Brú na Bóine. The Laws bought the property in the 1920s. The original Mrs Law was a Wallis from Drishane Castle, Milstreet, Co. Cork and the present Mrs Law is from the famous artistic families of Stuart and Maud Gonne Mc Bride and is an artist in her own right. In the afternoon they visited Herds Cottage which was originally on the estate of Hilltown House Bellowstown, Co. Meath.

Next day they were on the road early again visiting Ardgillan Demesne at Ballbriggan in North Co. Dublin where they had a guided tour of the house and the garden including The Rose Garden and The Potentilla Garden which contains about 200 varieties. Later in the day they to the poet Francis Ledwidges Cottage in Slane Co. Meath.

The final stop on the tour was Millmount Martello Tower and museum in Drogheda .From the top of the tower they had spectactular views of Drogheda and the Boyne .Believe it or not one lady on the trip met one of her “ancestors” in the Martello tower.

Four more Limerick Ladies , Anne Gabbett and Mary Foster, Mungret St Pauls Joan Hayes Crecora and Helen Lane, Murroe Boher took the digital photography course so we look forward to some lovely photos. This course was given by Terry Collins in the old horticulture college in An Grianán and the also travelled out to Clogher Head to take some photos.

In the evening time all took part in Laughter Yoga,Dancing Sing Song and Storytelling and Gardening.

CENTENARY GARDEN

The renovation of the old walled garden at An Grianán is now almost completed. This garden was used in the time of the Horticulture College but it was lying idle over the past number of years.The Centenary Committee decided in 2010 that they would restore and re-open the walled garden and re-name it The Centenary Garden. The whole area was cleared out and grass seeds were planted. A garden designer was then called in to place features all around it. Every Federation was invited to identify a feature or area that they would like to sponsor. The Limerick Federation chose the Sundial and area surrounding it and it will commemorate the presidency of Anne Maria Dennison.

The garden was officially opened in November 2010 and it is already open to visitors.

We hope to have more news next week from the travellers and all were singing the praises of Helen Lane who looked after everybody and made sure they had a pleasant trip.

LIMERICK LACE.

Concentration is the name of the game at the lace classes in The Dunraven Arms Hotel Adare. There are two more classes left in this series and all are very happy with the progress made so far. The silence at the class is amazing while we concentrate on running and darning.

MILFORD HOSPICE HARVEST FAIR
This year’s Harvest Fair will be held on Sunday August 21^st. Once again, Limerick Federation ICA will run the grocery stall and we hope that all guilds will contribute as usual. The people at Milford Hospice are very grateful for all the help given over the years. Groceries, jams, cakes and any food produce will be very acceptable.
KNITTING FOR THE IRISH HEART FOUNDATION
As 2011 is the European Year of Volunteering, ICA is getting the might of the organisation behind National Day of Volunteering September 30^th. To achieve this, we are partnering with Volunteer Centres Ireland and Kilkenny Shops to knit for the Irish Heart Foundation. You can knit hats, scarves and sets of mittens. These will be packaged by Kilkenny Shops and sold around the country. All profits go directly to the Irish Heart Foundation. There is a special offer on wool and patterns available from An Grianán. Our President, Anne Gabbett, will be in An Grianán for Limerick week, which is next week, and she will bring back some wool if you contact her while she is there.
CAPPAMORE SHOW
The good news is that Edward Heyden is coming to Cappamore Show, August 20^th, to do a cookery demonstration. His big night in the Woodlands was very successful and enjoyed by all who attended. We know that many of you would like to see him again and for those who missed out that night, now is your opportunity!
We remind you again that there is a very interesting competition for a tea cosy in any medium so we hope to have lots of entries as the Biddy Mullane Trophy for Arts & Crafts will be presented at Cappamore Show for this competition.
TIPS FOR MAKING JAM
Waste not, want not! So don’t leave all that lovely fruit go for nothing. Jams, jellies and chutneys are all easy to make so get a good recipe book and here are a few tips to set you on your way.

Avoid overripe fruit
Simmer gently before adding sugar
Boil rapidly after sugar is dissolved
Setting point: 103-106 ⁰C
Over-boiling: dark colour, poor flavour, low yield.
Well-set jam: pectin, acid, sugar in the correct ratio
Knob of butter reduces scum
Fill immediately after reaching setting point
Store in a cool, dark, airy cupboard

ART AND CRAFT EXHIBITION
The exhibition entitled “Le Chéile 1” will be officially opened in Newcastlewest Library on Tuesday July 19^th at 3pm. Entries will include paintings in acrylic, oil, pastel, pen and wash, watercolour or any craft of choice. These will be on display to the public until Friday July 29^th.
AROUND THE GUILDS
Broadford on their day out visited Griffins Garden Centre Dripsey and the lovely fishing town of Kinsale. Next stop was Mahon Point for the retail therapy before wining and dining in the Corbett Court Ballyhea. The highlight of the evening was a surprise birthday celebration for Joan Higgins, one of their founder members. Joan was left speechless when they presented her with a card and cake complete with sparklers! Go maireadh tú an céad!!
Health is your Wealth was the motto for Kilbeheny when 60 ladies attended a talk given by Fiona Treacy from the National Cancer Screening Programme. All being well, they went on their trip to the Sunny South East visiting Waterford Crystal, Dunbrody Famine Ship, Johnstown Castle and Avoca Handweavers. The highlight of this trip was a visit to Bree, Co. Wexford to see the beautiful ICA flower garden and monument on the site of the first ICA meeting, which took place in 1910.

MEMBERSHIP CARDS
The membership cards for the coming year are ready now and they will be posted out to guilds shortly. This year there is a slight change and the cards will be sent to guild treasurers so we ask the treasurers to give them out to members as many guilds are on holiday at the moment. There are 31 guilds paid up with over 500 members so we ask the others to send on the money to Mary Blackwell Federation Treasurer . It is important to be registered so that all events and activities have insurance cover.

COUNSELLING SERVICE
The ICA counselling service is available free to all members and their families. Maedbh O Herlihy is the counsellor and she can be contacted at 1850 652 652. The service is flexible and accommodating and help is always available for those in need.

MILFORD HOSPICE
For many years now Limerick Federation run the grocery stall at the Harvest Fair . All guilds collect groceries and other items for the fair and this is very much appreciated. This year the Harvest Fair will be held on Sunday August 29^th An té a bhíonn fial roineann Dia leis.

AROUND THE GUILDS
Drombana Guild ended the year on a colourful note with Mc Namara’s Garden Centre. They had a demonstration on filling baskets and window boxes and all went home with plants to brighten up their gardens. During the year the guild also held Yoga classes with Tadhg Ferriter and these were sponsored by Go For Life. The new officers elected at the AGM were President , Ann Madigan, Secretary , Helen Burke Treasurer, Ellen Looby PRO Mary Moloney . Best wishes to all and congratulations to Helen Burke who was awarded Personality of the Year.
Castlemahon Guild are joining Lynn Montague’s Knitting Circle in support of the Puchavichi Adult Institute in Belarus. The ladies will be busy with the needles and wool from now on. President, Nuala Condon wished everyone a pleasant and safe summer and guild activities resume on September 5^th
Castletroy Guild On Tuesday June 21^st the guild launched the new Castletroy Quilting Group. There was great excitement with a magnificent Quilting and Craft Exhibition on the night. Two main exhibitors were Limerick Federation Past President , Nora O Connor and Craft Officer , Ursula O Sullivan. Guild members provided the entertainment with “my best recipe” which was the competition on the night. The standard was high and the winner was Carmel O Mahony.
Ursula O Sullivan –a highly skilled quilter herself gave a demonstration on the night and all are looking forward to the first Castletroy Quilting course in September. Now is the chance if you want that special gift for Christmas or Weddings or you may just want to learn the skill. Nothing ventured nothing gained. Guild Secretary and artist Sharon Mc Grath displayed some of her oil paintings. She also has places left on her art programme for September. Maureen Sheehan PRO tells us that determation and hard work will get you anywhere and this was the motto of the guild when they set out on a contemporary embroidery training course earlier in the year. The results of their hard work were on display and included hand embroidery , machine embroidery and applique. It is holiday time now and they are off to Tullamore Show for a day out on Agust 14^th.
Feenagh Guild The Guild outing promises to be a very good day out with a visit to Brigits Garden near Oughterard and shopping in Galway on Sunday Julu 17^th Congratulations to Breda O Sullivan who won the Fruit of The Vale Cup at Charleville Show.

Helen Lane of Murroe/Boher Guild is delighted to lead a big group of Limerick ladies who are on their way to An Grianán for what is officially known as Limerick week. Some travel every year and for others it is their first visit and all are assured of a great week.

The classes for the week are as follows:

Yogla- Gentle exercises incorporating a mix of Tai Chi, Yoga, and Pilates.

Digital Photography- Learn to handle your camera with confidence, take better pictures and transfer them to your computer.

Historic Homes- History comes to life while visiting many old homes in Louth and Meath.

Time for Yourself- Aromatherapy, the essential oils, massage techniques and beauty care.

Flower Arranging- Learn to create flower and foliage designs for the home or that special occasion.

Calligraphy- Elegant and decorative script writing for that special message.

We wish them well and hope the sun shines on Termonfechin.

CELEBRITY BOOT CAMP

The good news is that Bootcamp is back. This time well known celebrities are going through their paces with the ICA ladies . The TV programmes are in the making and we look forward to seeing them in August.

KNOW YOUR KNEIGHBOUR

Six years ago Macra Na Feirme came up with the idea of holding Know Your Neighbour Weekend. The idea is to hold an event where you can meet and get to know your neighbours. This year events will be held all around the country on July 9-10 so we ask you all to go out and support them .If there is no Macra Group in your area just do something to get together anyway.

SEWING MACHINES

If there is a sewing machine in your house then it is time to get it out and dust it down and bring it along to Ballingarry Sewing Workshop on Wednesday July 13. The class runs from 10am-1pm and you will have an opportunity to learn about basic care of your sewing machine and lots more.

PITCH AND PUTT

Pitch and Putt continues in Adare every Tuesday night at 7pm. If you need lessons there is a coach available. Contact Kathleen Griffin Sports and Leisure Officer. 087 2172225 or061394241. Kathleen also advise you to get out walking during the summer months . There are lots of new walking groups starting up so why not join one of them.

INFORMATION NIGHT
How would you join the ICA? This was the question asked at the Information Night held by Limerick Federation in The Dunraven Arms Hotel Adare. The answer is very simple. There are thirty three guilds scattered throughout the county and city of Limerick and you can join any one of them at any time. Get in contact with Anne Gabbett 061-228017 or Joan Hayes 061-355357 and they will put you in touch with the guild of your choice.
On the night, Anne Gabett, Federation President, gave a talk on the structure of ICA and how it works. Joan Hayes, Federation Secretary, added a little humour by telling us that her husband was the driving force in getting her to join the organisation over thirty years ago. In fact he had to drive her all around the country to meetings in the early years.
A discussion followed on the value of membership of an organisation which offers support, friendship, personal development and education to women of all ages .Guild activities include cookery, gardening, arts and crafts, painting, drama, computers, health and fitness, travel and entertainment. Guilds also get involved in community activities and we support many charitable organisations. “Variety is the spice of life” and this is what you get in the ICA.

LACE MAKING As the lacemakers of Limerick ICA get to work they are helping to continue a long tradition which goes back to 1828 when Charles Walker, a native of Oxford, brought twenty four girls to Limerick to teach lace-making.
Limerick lace is a form of embroidery on net: being either chain stitch (tambour) or darned net also called run-lace, or a combination of both techniques. The making of this type of lace became possible when machine made net became readily available. The first factory in Limerick was set up in Mount Kennet, on the river side. To get a place in the factory was quite difficult. Each girl had to provide a certificate from a doctor as well as one giving her age which was to be between eleven and fourteen years. A reference from some influential citizen had also to be provided .The hours of working were from 6am to 6pm.By 1953 it was reported that Walker employed 1,100 females, about 800 of whom were apprentices working in the factories at Limerick and Kilrush; while about 300 were employed in their own homes in Counties Limerick and Clare.
These facts are taken from a book called Limerick Lace by Nellie Ó Cléirigh and Veronica Rowe.

NATIONAL AGM: All Federations from around the country were represented on Saturday last May 21 at National AGM in Portlaoise. Members from Askeaton/Ballysteen, Caherdavin, Cappamore, Castleconnell,
Castletroy, Clarina, Drombanna, Kildimo, Limerick City, Mungret, and Oola travelled to join with their colleagues from various parts of the country. Address by National President Anne Maria Dennison set the tone for the day ,followed by various reports including Financial, Implementation of ICA strategy 2010/2011, Policy& Procedures also General Report. Congratulations were extended to the recently elected members of the 2011/12
Procedures Standing Committee: Phil Brennan (Westmeath), Deirdre Flanagan (Mayo),
Joan Lenehan (Kerry), Ann O’Connell (South Tipperary) and Mary O’Reilly, Wicklow.
Comhgairdeas also to Eileen Tighe, Barna guild, Co na Gaillimhe who was elected Connaught Vice President. Eileen (nee Roche) is a West Limerick woman who left her native Castlemahon to pursue her studies in Galway and settled there. Her sister Nuala Condon ,Castlemahon Guild President, and all her Limerick friends extend their best wishes to her .The social side of all ICA gatherings is never forgotten and on this occasion National President Anne Maria was there to congratulate and present a bouquet of flowers to Clondalkin founder member Ann Doran who will celebrate her 100^th Birthday shortly .Ann has already celebrated with Uachtarán na hEireann Mary McAlleese in Áras an Uachtaráin and of course her own guild have a surprise in store also.

MAINISTIR NA FÉILE: Members are once again joining the national celebrations of an Abbeyfeale native. Master wood turner Liam Flynn is one of five artists whose work has been chosen by An Post to celebrate the Year of Craft 2011.Liam has been working from his studio in the town for over a quarter of a century and the recipient of many accolades both national and international. CAPPAMORE SHOW: Its all systems go for this East Limerick Show which takes place on Saturday August 20 . As ‘ The year of the Craft ’ is currently being celebrated it is intended to present the Biddy Mullane Perpetual Cup to the winner in the Limerick ICA Federation Craft competition which will be judged at the show. The late Biddy Mullane of Adare was an excellent craftsperson who participated in many craft exhibitions and competitions. She was an ICA member for over 65 years and her family, in her honour, and bearing in mind her love of crafts, presented this cup to the Limerick Federation. Cappamore ICA members at Federation AGM

FEDERATION AGM: All officers gave their reports on their areas of responsibility for the past year and written reports were circulated in book form to each guild. Newly elected officers were announced and will be taking up duty during the month of May following the ICA Annual General Meeting and the holding of the Federation handing over meeting. President Anne Gabbett , in acknowledging the contribution of the members for the past year, is looking forward to an equally successful year ahead.
She thanked all for their assistance and also for contributing so generously to the Adapt collection taken up at the meeting .She wished everybody an enjoyable summer.
Following the AGM business Ballyhahill /Loughill members entertained the gathering
with their Eleanora Gibbon Variety Show musical entry,’Hands’ winning National Poetry entry by Kay Hickey of Castleconnell was recited, Art entries were judged and the piece de resistance ,the homemade muffins, which were also in competition, were enjoyed by all.

Pitch/Putt has commenced and their book club is currently reviewing “Diamonds and holes in my shoes" by Deirdre Purcell. You might like to visit Dublin Botanic Gardens, where a travelling exhibition ‘Transformations …..Dublin’ between the Botanic Gardens in Dublin and The Royal Botanic Garden in Edinburgh, can be seen between May 4 and June 12. Dublin Castle is the venue for a Public Conference on World Crafts on June 9. Down in Kenmare is an exhibition of Kenmare Lace. COMHBHRÓN: The recent death of Lorrie Crosse, Ballybrown was received with sadness by her ICA colleagues in Clarina ICA and elsewhere. Lorrie always enjoyed the social gatherings of ICA contributing with music or song when the occasion was called for. Her funeral took place on Sunday April 10, following Requiem Mass in her native Ballybrown, to Kilkeady cemetery.Condolenceas to her nieces Martina and Catherine, cousins, extended family and friends on her passing. May she rest in peace.
Sympathy is also extended to former ICA National President Anne Murray
on the death on April 11 of her mother Mrs Enda Daly, Gort ,Co Galway.

NEWS FROM THE GUILDS: Ballingarry members had a very interesting talk by Eileen Toomey on the health benefits of herbs and growing your own small vegetable patch. Eileen also grows a large variety of culinary and medicinal potted herbs, again with a focus on heritage and native herbs such as Pennyroyal Mint, Self Heal and Meadowsweet. She very kindly had a range of her herbs and plants with her, so there is no excuse but to get out the gardening gloves and start straight away!

Murroe/Boher guild had very successful AGM with great turn out of members and five more ladies joining shortly. Upgrading their computer skills with assistance from Limerick County VEC was much appreciated by all. Their PRO Breda Fitzpatrick looks forward to downloading photographs as part of her ICA brief and the forthcoming trip in May to Cork and Fota Wild Life Park will be an ideal opportunity to test her new skills. Information Officer Nora Stapleton from Oola was delighted with her visit and the high standard of catering which followed.

Newcastle West is the latest area to start an ICA guild .They have appointed their officers and would welcome more ladies from the surrounding areas to join them .Their next meeting will be on Thursday May 5 at 8pm in The Brothers of Charity Premises, Lacey’s Cross near the town. Following in the footsteps of National ICA President Anne Maria Dennison another West Limerick lady has been appointed to high office in ICA. Castlemahon native Pauline Tighe (nee Roche), a member of An Spideal guild, Co Galway, has been elected Connaught ICA Vice President .Her siblings, including her sister Nuala Condon of Castlemahon guild, have been helping her to pop the champagne and celebrate the occasion.

ELEANORA GIBBON CUP 2011

Congratulations to Ballyhahill / Loughill ICA who brought home the Federation award with their Variety Show on ‘Summertime’last week.They faced stiff competition from old rivals Cappamore but at the end of the night the Shannonsiders won out .They now prepare for the National Finals in Mullingar
Arts Centre on Sunday June 12 where it is expected that many Limerick supportere will be there to cheer them on.

Irish Country Women's Association's chief home economist Marie McGuirk will, once again, be making an appearance on ‘Four Live’ RTE1 this time on Friday April 6 demonstrating her cookery skills.

Do also watch out for her articles in ‘Woman’s Way’ magazine every two weeks from early this month.

Tribute to

Mrs Maureen Fitzgerald, Cloongownagh, Kildimo

1923 /2011

The death occurred of Mrs Maureen Fitzgerald, relict of the late James, at Abbot’s Close Nursing Home Askeaton, on February 7, 2011. Following her wake at home, her remains were removed from Downey’s Funeral Home, Pallaskenry, on February 9 to St. Joseph’s Church Kildimo. She was laid to rest beside her husband in Kilcornan graveyard on Thursday February 10 2011 following Requiem Mass in the church she attended so assiduously during life.

Lisnalty, Rosbrien was where Maureen was born on August 14, 1923. Her parents were Kate, nee O’Connell, formerly of Kilcornan and John O’Shaughnessy. Her only sister Rita predeceased her the previous December. Both girls were given a sharp lesson in human frailty when their parents died within six weeks of each other and Maureen was only sixteen. Well used to farm work, the two girls took over the heavy duties of running the family farm. Early education was at the old school in Rosbrien.

Maureen’s farming skills were put to good use when she married James Fitzgerald. As well as milking by hand, she undertook the care of calves and the rearing of geese and turkeys for the Christmas market. The farm income was also supplemented by her in producing eggs for local sales. Organic produce was also cultivated for the family table and for feeding the six sons born to James and Maureen. They lovingly recall their mother’s baking skills and her speciality rhubarb tarts. Along with all this practical work, she took great pride in producing flowers to beautify the environs of the family home.

When the late Maureen’s health curtailed her many activities, she looked forward to a weekly visit to Mount Mercy Day Centre on O’Connell Avenue for her last ten years. When her final end came, her passing was as peaceful as the life she lived for her eighty-seven years. Sympathy is extended to her six sons, Patrick, Seamus, William, John, Raymond and Thomas, her relatives in Rosbrien and her extended family.

New Beginnings
The accolade for the first new guild of the second ICA century in Limerick Federation goes to Newcastle West. Following a request from a number of interested ladies in the locality the inaugural meeting was held on Thursday March 10 where a group of approx twenty ladies assembled to get details of joining ICA. Much to the delight of Federation President and Hon Sec Anne Gabbett and Joan Hayes volunteers willingly came forward to fill the officer positions in the new guild. The next meeting will take place on Thursday April 7 in Courtney Lodge Hotel, Newcastle West, commencing at 8pm.There is a warm welcome assured to all ladies wishing to join what promises to be another vibrant guild in West Limerick where members in Ardagh, Broadford, Castlemahon, Feenagh, Kilmeedy and Mainistir na Féile are more than willing ‘to extend the hand of friendship’ Ní neart go cur le céile.

ART Competition

An art competition being arranged by Arts Officer Mary Moloney will be judged at the Federation AGM in Adare on Tuesday April 26 2011.
’A Spring Scene’, using any of the following: Acryllic, Oil, Pastel,Watercolour,.

ACWW Conference
The European Conference of ACWW is being held in Dublin this year from April 4 to 8. and at the close of the conference it is intended to make a presentation of a cheque of Coins for Friendship . All guilds have an opportunity to contribute, on an annual basis, towards this worthwhile cause in aid of improving facilities for women in third world countries. Guild who may not have already done are requested to forward outstanding contributions to Federation Hon Treasurer Mary Blackwell as soon as possible who will be submitting same to Central Office for inclusion in this presentation.

News from the Guilds

Ballingarry members held a coffee morning on Friday March 25 in aid of Irish Cancer Society and wish to thank all who supported this worthy cause . Their next guild meeting takes on Wed April 6, commencing at 8pm.

Ballyhahill/Loughill guild’s AGM took place recently with all positions filled. Their Grianán Teachta Peggy Kelly is busy organising some members for Limerick week and Daisy Kearney, who was the unanimous choice for PRO, will have lots of scope to utilize her storytelling skills.

Castletroy members have been busy recently upskilling. Among their projects are computer training and contemporary embroidery courses They are also interested in tutor's /trainer's of Limerick Lace and would like to hear from anybody who could assist them

Mainistir na Féile members are presently preparing for their AGM on Tuesday April 5 in the Vocational School, having had lots of practice since the guilds formation in 1969.Their honorary member, nonagenarian May O’Connor of Islandboy, Abbeyfeale, also played an active part in the earlier guild formed in 1947 until it closed in 1965. Her friends and colleagues wish May and her husband Paddy ‘fad saol ’ and look forward to exchanging lots of lore with her at many more ICA meetings.

Raheen members extend an open invitation to their next guild meeting on Wednesday April 5 to all ladies who would like to hear more about ICA. The meeting commences at 8pm in The Milleniuim Centre,beside St Nessan’s Church,Raheen and a warm welcome is assured.

Adapt is committed to doing this by promoting awareness and recognition of the right to a violence-free life and by providing high quality services and supports that are based on the needs of the women and children involved. Services provided include emergency refuge Helpline, group and individual support, accompanying women to court and to other services, education and training, information and help in relation to housing, finance and legal options. In 2009, ADAPT provided refuge to over 160women and over 300 childrenand carry out these vital services on an extremely low budget. In order to assist in their very valuable work a box will be available for basic toiletries:soap/talc/toothpast/brushes or any other such items as you may wish to donate.Members who may not be attending are invited to participate by sending their donations with other guild members.

ART Competition

Ballingarry members will be holding a coffee morning on this Friday March 25 from 10am to 1pm in the Hall in aid of Irish Cancer Society and your support for this worthy cause would be much appreciated. Their next guild meeting takes on Wed April 6, commencing at 8pm.

Ballyhahill/Loughill guild’s AGM took place recently with all positions filled. Their Grianán Teachta Peggy Kelly is busy organising some members for Limerick week and Daisy Kearney, who was the unanimous choice for PRO, will have lots of scope to utilize her storytelling skills.

Mainistir na Féile members are presently preparing for their AGM on Tuesday April 5 in the Vocational School, having had lots of practice since the guilds formation in 1969.Their honorary member,nonagenarian May O’Connor of Islandboy also played an active part in the earlier guild formed in 1947 until it closed in 1965. Her friends and colleagues wish May and her husband Paddy ‘fad saol ’ and look forward to exchanging lots of lore with her at many more ICA meetings.

‘Reinventing and rebuilding Ireland - getting to the heart of the matter’

‘Through good times and bad the ICA has been in a position to combine two ingredients vital to our society --- stability and creativity. Stability is not about keeping things as they were – it is a about creating the calm environment in which we can get on with our lives with enough security to allow us also to be creative.
In the ICA centenary year of 2010 the organisation’s history was foremost in our minds. Members were aware of the constant flow of creative initiatives which marked the ICA out as always capable of finding better ways to make people’s lives more meaningful, more comfortable, and more hopeful. In those years since 1910 women were the leaders and members of the ICA just as we are now and they would expect us to be just as innovative.
Many constructive ideas were born from small ideas by groups of ICA women in their communities. They grew and things changed for the better. That is a challenge for all of us – in our Guilds, at the Federation and in our national work.
Your attention is now directed to the broader challenges that our country faces.
I have congratulated An Taoiseach Enda Kenny and his new Cabinet and wished them well. I have also set out very clearly that in building the future, organisations such as ours, must be involved in the development of reformed structures and new approaches to public policy and better services to our communities.
An Taoiseach has also been advised that ICA believes that the future will be built on local sustainability, strengthened communities, the sharing of creativity, knowledge and skills, and on conservation and self-sufficiency within communities and families. In every aspect of public policy we can contribute if Government is open to genuine engagement with civil society.
We know from our personal experience, and as an organisation, that doing more with less is not beyond imagination. However, to do this, we have to move from a strongly vested interest approach, to one which places a wider common good at the centre of decision making.
The Programme for Government and the new Cabinet portfolios suggest some significant changes in areas of concern to us including health and the delivery of health services and policy and services in relation to children. Our experience and expertise in these areas suggest that the changes must be carefully considered but they must also become clear and effective quickly.
The public good and quality services must be front and centre, together with, but not only, cost effective delivery.
Services which are fundamental – access to basic health care, speedy diagnosis and treatment of serious illness, services to women and children who are victims of domestic and sexual violence; and quality care for older people are not luxuries in a modern democracy. In one, which needs to use its resources wisely, they are priorities.
I was particularly struck in the new Programme for Government by the commitment to reform, from the Constitution down through public services. While in many ways the 1937 Constitution may have served the country, when it comes to the role of women it is less than a desirable model. I have advised An Taoiseach that we will want to see a very thorough debate on reforms and a real commitment to achieving changes that underpin the equality of women as citizens and as full participants in our democracy.
We need to be ready for this debate, and between now and the next Regional Conference I will be proposing a consultative process throughout the Association. The question is simple - what reforms do we want to see in Ireland and how it is governed fit for the 21^st century?
We need to be familiar with the debate and to formulate and research our own thinking, so that our voice is informed, imaginative and practical.
Within the ICA we are gradually creating a clearer strategic approach to our own work and to re-establishing our role, not only as an important organisation for ourselves but also as a vital force in Ireland. If we are to be effective then we all have to work together and to have a vision of the ICA that is important, influential and able to lead and support change.’

Cookery Events
Irish Country Women's Association's chief home economist Marie McGuirk will be making an appearance on ‘Four Live’ RTE1 this Friday March 11 and also on the following Friday March 18 demonstrating her cookery skills. No stranger to the media Marie beat off strong competition when she was the winner at the ‘Home for Christmas ‘cookery event in Farmleigh House, effortlessly producing a three course Christmas meal.

Do also watch out for her articles in ‘Womans Way’ magazine every two weeks from early April.

Of course Marie is also well known to ICA members attending cookery courses at An Grianán where she demonstrates on a regular basis.

ACWW Conference
The European Conference of ACWW is being held in Dublin this year from April 4 to 8. and at the close of the conference it is intended to make a presentation of a cheque of Coins for Friendship . All guilds have an opportunity to contribute, on an annual basis, towards this worthwhile cause in aid of improving facilities for women in third world countries. Guild who may not have already done are requested to forward outstanding contributions to Federation Hon Treasurer Mary Blackwell who will be submitting same to Central Office for inclusion in this presentation.

This four-part social history chronicles the highlights of the first hundred years of the Irish Countrywomen’s Association, using archive footage and photographs together with contributions from members. Ballingarry February meeting was a wonderful success. Theresa Storey-Cosgrave of ‘The Green Apron’ artisan Preserve Company gave a most interesting talk and demonstration of how to make quick and simple yeast breads. All the delights, both savoury and sweet, fresh from the oven, were sampled. a real taste sensation.

West Limerick Resources will be starting an exciting training programme this Spring in Ballingarry, called OUT OF THE BOX. It covers topics from life skills to craft skills to sustainable living through organic gardening. Caherdavin members extend their condolences to their former colleague and past Federation Secretary Catherine Murphy on the death of her husband Jim whose funeral took place, following Requiem Mass in Christ the King Church Caherdavin, on Wednesday February 2 2011 to his native Tipperary.

Kilbehenny ICA finished off last year with a visit to an Abba Show in Waterford’s Theatre Royal, preceded by fine dining in the Tower Hotel.
As many of their members are proficient in knitting they are now organising a ‘learn to knit programme’ which is open to all in the area. This will be followed by assistance with other crafts. Following the success of last year’s four-day tour to Donegal planning for this year’s tour in June is in progress and already attracting much interest
Ballyagran members extend their condolences to their colleague Nellie Cagney on the death of Nellie’s sister Hannah Lehane Newmarket, Co Cork. Mrs Lehane’s funeral took place on January 15 to Clonfert Cemetery. May she rest in peace.

1911 and is still going strong. This guild has the distinction of being the longest continuously running guild in the country and also of having the oldest ICA member nationwide. There to join them for the ‘Knees Up’ was National ICA President Anne Maria Dennison who no doubt will also be on hand in ‘The Banner County’ next year when the second oldest guild… Gortlaman celebrate their longevity.

Peg and Kathleen were among their Castlemahon colleagues who were recipients of Certificates of Long Service to ICA. last year. They are dearly missed by their families and their Community to whom sympathy is extended.

Nora Kavanagh RIP January 18 2011

It was with sadness that her friends and former colleagues in Drombanna ICA received the news of Nora Kavanagh’s death last week RIP. Nora, who was in her eighty sixth year, was an ICA member for many years and her skills in craft including knitting, crochet, embroidery, patchwork, and sewing are well acknowledged. In recent years she took up painting and among the gifts brought to the altar at her Requiem Mass was a piece of knitting commenced during her last illness. She is deeply mourned by her sons and daughters, their families including her nine grandchildren, sister Bridie, her many kind neighbours and friends including Drombanna Day Care Centre personnel. Nora’s remains were laid to rest with her late husband Eddie and their son Ed, on Friday January 21 2011, in Mount St Lawrence Extension Cemetery following Requiem Mass in Knockea Church where she had worshipped for many years. Following the burial a reception in ‘The Stroller’, Ballyneety was hosted by Drombanna ICA.

Following the success of the ICA Boot Camp programme last year the three feisty ICA mentors Breda, Imelda, and Josephine are back once again! A new group of raw recruits are at their mercy and being put through their paces. Over the next few weeks there are surprises in store for these 12 young ladies as they are introduced to the philosophy of self-sufficiency of the Irish Country Women’s Association. National Launch of ICA centenary celebrations January20 2010

Ar Bhóthairín Na Smaointe 2010

I invite you to join with me as we take a trip together ar Bhóthairín Na Smaointe

remembering past events, absent friends and the many successes of the past twelve months.

As members of Bantracht na Tuaithe review the past year memories come crowding back of the many celebrations held throughout the length and breath of Ireland commerating the centenary year of the founding of The Irish Country Women’s Association.

Commencing at the beginning of 2010 ICA women from all parts of the country, those who held high office and none, gathered in the great hall of Dublin Castle to hear National President of ICA Anne Maria Dennison introduce Uachtarán na hEirenann Mary McAleese who launched the centenary year of their organisation … Bantracht na Tuaithe.

In her address President McAlleese commended those women who founded the organisation in Bree Co Wexford in 1910. and also paid tribute to all the women of the time who endured hardship and poverty, poor conditions and lack of opportunity The organisation through the provision of education to their members, through lobbying for improved conditions such as electricity and piped water, and better health facilities succeeded to meet their goals and our present generation of women are reaping the benefit of those founding members and those who followed them.
The organisation still continues its work for women not alone in this country but also in less fortunate areas and strongly supports the Association of Country Women of the World.
Some months later the Pugin Church of the Assumption in Bree, Co Wexford was packed to overflowing as ICA women from all parts of the country travelled to this village in County Wexford where Anita Lette founded the Irish Country Womens Association in 1910. Representatives of Church and State, of farming and community organisations, joined the celebrations with National ICA President Anne Maria Dennison and her colleagues from an association with over 700 guilds throughout the country.
It was so fitting that Anita Letts granddaughter Anita McNamara of Kildare was present to hear the tributes paid and be part of the celebrations of an organisation who are reaping the benefit of those founding members and those who followed them.
And so the celebrations continued with many other social and cultural events. Comhairle Chontae Luimnigh hosted a Civic Reception for delegates to the National AGM of the association in Adare with Cathaoirleach David Naughton MCC making a presentation to National ICA President Anne Maria Dennison of Mainistir na Féile an Anne Maria in turn presenting An Cathaoirleach with a framed first day cover of the ICA postage stamp.
Limerick Federation marked the year with a number of events including two Ecumenical Services one in the Augustine Church and a Carol Service with the Federation choir performing in St Michael’s Church, Barrington Street. Other events included an Art Exhibition ‘Comóradh Céad Bliain’in Dooradoyle Library. Nollag na mBan and Halloween festivities were celebrated in Woodlands Hotel, Adare with many former Federation Presidents attending.
Guilds throughout the city and county marked the occasion …a tree was planted by the Mainistir na Féile members, Cappamore ladies climbed Sliabh na mBan, Kildimo ICA Art group ‘The Killulta Painters’ participated in aTG4 programme as Gaeilge and so the list continues.
We are conscious that as a new year unfolds there are many members who will not be joining us on our journey forward. To their loved ones we offer our condolences and prayers and acknowledge their contribution over the years to ICA including Chrissie Scanlon, Adare, Nellie Ryan, Askeaton,Dina
Fitzgerald, Clarina, Nell Dillon, Galbally and Nancy McGrath, Pallasgreen.
During the year it was with great sadness that we also learnt of the death of our esteemed past national president,(1994 /1997) Mrs Brídín Twist of Ennis, Co Clare.Bridín was present at University College Galway in June when our Association was honoured with the conferring of a honorary doctorate on our current National President, Anne Maria Dennison and passed away some weeks later.

Limerick Fed ICA Choir performing at Centenary Carol Service Dec 11 2010

Ecumenical Carol Service

Following many celebrations since January last marking the ICA centenary year, Limerick Federation organised their final event … a carol service in St Michael’s Church, Barrington St, Limerick recently.

Participants in the Federation choir were drawn from various guilds throughout the city and county with Ellen Looby, Drombanna conducting.

Rev Jane Galbraith and Federation President Anne Gabbett were there to welcome everybody including guest of honour Limerick’s Mayor Clr Maria Byrne .

The choir’s rendering of Christmas Carols was very moving and all who participated are to be commended including Organist Sr Ann O’Sullivan, Flautist Patricia Sheehan, Soloist Eileen O’Byrne ,and Mary Raleigh on her recitation of ‘ A Wexford Carol’.

Light refreshments of a festive nature after the service added to what was a very appropriate finale to the celebrations of 1910 / 2010.

The members of Galbally ICA were saddened to hear of the death of their colleague & founding member Mrs Nell Dillon (née Oliver) Annagh, Galbally, Co. Limerick recently.Condolences are extended to her daughter Bridget Sheehan, son-in-law Jack her granddaughters, extended family, and friends RIP
An ICA guard of honour was provided by her colleagues and friends from the organisation as a tribute to Mrs Dillon’s contribution to one of the oldest guilds in Limerick Federation.
Her funeral took place, following Requiem Mass in Galbally Church to the local cemetery on Thursday Nov 25 2010.

Ecumenical Carol Service
To mark the close of the ICA Centenary year celebrations a carol service will be held in St Michael’s Church, Barrington St, Limerick on Saturday night next Dec11 commencing at 6pm.

Ballingarry Guild’s guest speaker was the very talented Robbie Curtis who gave a wonderful cookery demonstration, full of hints and tips from mouth watering duck delicious quiche and devine pastries! The competition for the best handmade Christmas decoration was won by Anne Baggott! Thank you to all those who donated and came along to support the ICA Christmas Charity Bazaar despite freezing conditions.Over 500 euros was raised with lots of new toys for the "toys for tubs" appeal.All proceeds will be divided between the following four charities:The Butterfly Club (Rathkeale); Duchennes (www.duchenne.ieThe Metabolic Unit, Temple St. Children’s Hospital & St. Vincent de Paul (www.svp.ie) The ICA Christmas night will take place on Wed December 15 in the supper room, everyone please bring a plate.
Castletroy Guilds first Christmas Fair, held in the Kilmurray Lodge Hotel recently was a wonderful success with almost a sell out of handmade crafts and homebaking by the guild members. Prizes for the raffle included Christmas cakes by Kitty O’Keeffe and Sonja O'Hehir. National ICA President Anne Maria Dennison performed the opening ceremony and was joined by Anne Gabbett, current Federation President and Nora O’Connor holder of that role between 1970/1972 and a now a member in Castletroy. Guild President Maureen Sheehan was fulsome in her praise to all for their efforts, including the support by members from other areas. Ní neart go cur le céile.

Dromcollogher Christmas Fair

Saturday next Dec 11 between 12.00 and 5pm.will provide you with an opportunity to support a small, local Limerick endeavor and come home with some unique Christmas gifts.

The students at An t’Ionad Glas, The Organic College in Dromcollogher, Co. Limerick are putting together a vibrant Christmas Market to showcase their talents and to show people what the Organic College is all about. A speaker from Slow Food Movement will make a short presentation at 4.00pm. to outline the work of this organization in promoting quality food in schools and around the world. There will be a wide range of stalls at the market, selling fare from the Gardens as well as crafts and food gifts including delicious chutneys, jams, soups, cordials, home baking, hand-made Chocolates, and other goodies.

Anne Maria has been a member of the local guild for many years and despite her busy schedule keeps in regular touch with her colleagues in Fealeside.

Kildimo Guild’s ‘Killulta ICA Painters’ group held their annual art exhibition ‘Obair na mBan XI ‘in Newcastle West library recently with Federation President Anne Gabbett performing the official opening.
This prolific group have been painting together for many years and held their first exhibition to celebrate the millennium.

Raheen members extend an open invitation to their next guild meeting on Wednesday April 5 to all ladies who would like to hear more about ICA. The meeting commences at 8pm in The Milleniuim Centre,beside St Nessan’s Church,Raheen and a warm welcome is assured.
