CLARE EMBROIDERY:-
A week of Clare Embroidery entitle “ Flowers of the Burren” will be held in ICA Gortlomáin Cottage, Barefield, Co Clare from 17th to 20th of June 2013.
Clare Embroidery was first introduced as a cottage industry at the end of 19th century by Mrs. Florence Vere O’Brien. She organised Embroidery classes at Newhall, near Ennis, in 1895 for a group of local girls who came for two hours every week to learn the craft.  When they were proficient, they took away work to do in their own homes. The girls were paid the sale price for the items less material costs and expenses. They also kept any prize money they won.
The designs are inspired by the delicate wild flowers of The Burren and they are worked on white cotton or linen with blue and red coloured thread.
The embroidery week starts with registration on Monday June 17th at 16.30 to 18.00 and continues with embroidery in the mornings and guided trips to places of interest in the afternoons.
Fee for the course €70. This covers tuition, materials kit provided, coffee breaks, & trips on Tuesday and Wednesday. For further information and to reserve a place contact Frances O Halloran 087 2799260 or Mary Nealon 086 3251821
