CASTLECONNELL WALK:-
On Sunday May19th Limerick ICA Ladies assembled in the scenic village of Castleconnell on the banks of the river Shannon for a walk to raise funds for The Breast Cancer Research Institute. This lovely old style village well known for hurling and fly fishing was the ideal spot for our walk and Castleconnell ICA led by their President Kay Hickey were out to welcome us. We left the Church and walked through the village and across the playground passing on our way the old vocational school which has been converted into A Harp School . We continued on our journey along the banks of The Shannon and everyone was delighted with the peace and tranquillity of this lovely spot where a family of swans presented a delightful photo opportunity.  Next we came into the grounds of The Castle Oaks Hotel which enjoyed a previous life as a Presentation Convent complete with boarding and day school. We returned to the village which was packed with people as they were celebrating the unveiling of a statue of the famous Ahane/Castleconnell hurler Mick Mackey. Young and old were enjoying the day and it was great to see all the children carrying their hurleys and keeping the great GAA tradition alive. Before we finished our walk we visited the place known locally as “world’s end” –it is very famous for fly fishing and the locals informed us that it was known world wide in the time of The Gunning family. At the end of the walk we called in to Charco’s for a very welcome cup of tea and lovely fresh scones.
CARE TO DRIVE-
The Care to Drive is a volunteer delivered transport programme where volunteers are recruited to drive patients to their hospital chemotherapy treatments. The patient referrals come in from the hospital who through chatting with a patient, are very aware of their needs.Trained drivers pick patients up at the doors of their homes, drive them to the door of the hospital and when the treatment is finished , drive them home again.
