It was with sadness that the death of Mrs Joan Carroll (nee O’Leary) of Mountfox, Kilmallock was received last week. A founder member of Kilmallock ICA (1946) Joan had unbroken membership since its formation until ill health intervened in more recent times. In the compilation of History of the Limerick Federation in 2004 Joan gave invaluable assistance with Kilmallock’s own history and was a frequent attendee at various ICA events, together with her daughter Kay Kelleher of Dromin/Athlacca guild.

Pre deceased by her husband John, she is deeply mourned by her sons, daughters, their families, neighbours, friends and all ICA members throughout the Limerick area especially her Kilmallock colleagues.

Her funeral took place on Sunday last September 27th, following Requiem Mass in St Peter and Paul’s Church, Kilmallock to Dromin cemetery.

National Ploughing Championship

Kildare Federation has issued a special invitation to all Limerick people who make the journey to this event in the Athy area during the next few days to visit the ICA stand there. Hosted by their members you can be assured of a cead míle failte from the’ Lily Whites ‘ and also from National ICA President West Limerick native Anne Marie Dennison.

Participants ,in their various categories, from Pallaskenry, Broadford, Dromcollagher and Milford will of course be hoping to bring home some awards and all good wishes are extended to them.

Best of luck is also extended to Richard Kennedy of Clarina, National Dairy Chairman of IFA as he contests the Presidency of that organisation. Born into farming and National President of Macra some years ago with a wealth of experience behind him he would appear to be the natural leader of Irish farmers for the future.Go neirigh go geal leis.

Future of Women in Europe

One of the participants at a seminar on ‘The future of Women in Ireland’ attended by European Commissioner José Manuel Barrosa in The Savoy Hotel, Limerick last weekend was West Limerick lady Anne Marie Dennison, President of the Irish Country women’s Association. Joining her on the podium was

Kildimo lady Una O’Shea-Murphy in her capacity as President of Network Ireland and Susan McKay, Chairperson of the National Women’s Council.

Congratulations to all of these articulate ladies on their relevant presentations.

A large gathering from the Mid West attended including many ICA members from the surrounding areas of Caherdavin, Castleconnell Crecora, Mungret, Raheen and Kildimo.

News from the Guilds

Coffee Morning, in aid of Milford Hospice, will be held on Saturday next September 26th from 11 to 1.30pm in the Courthouse Ballyneety, hosted by Drombana I.C.A Your support would be appreciated.

Limerick City guild hosted a very interesting presentation by Angela and Ellen from ‘Foot Solutions’ recently. Advice on the feet and correct footwear together with an opportunity to try on samples of different shoes made the night most informative. Mary Kelly who is PRO of this guild will be happy to share the contact details with those interested and you can talk to her this Wednesday night at the Federation meeting in Adare.

Federation Meeting

Every four months a general meeting of guilds is held in each Federation. This is the place where all ICA information is circulated, discussed, debated on and if necessary voted on. It is important that all guilds be represented at such meetings. Bearing in mind the capacity of the function room where Limerick Federation meets in Woodlands Hotel, Adare, there is no restriction on the numbers who may attend. It is advisable that representative from each guild brings back a report to their own guild and in that way everybody is kept informed and up to date.Of course there is a wonderful social aspect to theses meetings also where old and new friends share their experiences, problems, joys and sorrows over a cupán tae.

On this Wednesday night September 23rd the Autumn Federation meeting takes place at the usual venue, commencing at 8pm and a cead mile fáilte is assured to all ICA members No doubt there will be stories to tell of sailing on the high seas, exploring the Yorkshire Dales, visiting the Brandenburg Gates ,the Bundestag, or many other interesting places.

Of course these discussions will be preceded by the business of the night which includes various competitions. Is it possible that those bottles of Limon deCello brought back from foreign parts may have enhanced some of the Lemon Drizzle cakes!
