Peggy Neville,Josie Sheehan & Maggie Foley of Askeaton/Ballysteen ICA on a recent Federation trip to Yorkshire.

Mí na Samhna
Samhain, the ancient Celtic festival marking the start of Winter is almost upon us, the feast of the dead in pagan and Christian times, signalising the close of the harvest. Oiche Shamhna, oiche na h-aimléise was once marked by such customs as story telling of eerie creatures roaming the countryside after dark, snap apple, ag cuartaiocht, playing tricks on neighbours but today’s ‘trick or treat’ is a far cry from such times. Originating through the mass immigration of many centuries the American influence of dressing up as witches, painting of faces, weaing masks will see small bands of children calling on their neighbours on November 31st hoping to collect goodies for their own parties.
To exchange some more memories do join your ICA colleagues in the Woodlands Hotel, Adare on the following night Sunday November 1st for their party which commences at 8pm sharp with dinner followed by entertainment ‘til late. Please confirm your attendance in advance with Mary Blackwell at (087)9048455 and be there in good time before the fairies or the pooka get your place.!

News from the Guilds

Doon ICA recently hosted a visit by the Marie Keating Foundation, a Foundation that aims to raise awareness of some of the more common cancers. such as breast, cervical, prostate and skin. The reception in the village was excellent and over 60 people came to either visit the nurse Maeve O’Sullivan, or listen to her talk in the Community Centre. The organisers who travelled from Cork were very pleased with the East Limerick reception, which they received and emphasised that if just one person came to hear about cancer awareness it was worthwhile. A considerable amount was raised for the Foundation on the night and the guild members say ‘ Many Thanks ‘to all those who supported the project in different ways

Castlemahon, Feenagh, and Mainistir na Féile were among the guilds represented at an open forum on ‘Older People’s Group Network’ hosted by West Limerick Resources in Newcastle West recently .The aim of the network is to facilitate greater communication between WLR and groups working on the ground.

Kilbehenny members are about to commence a craft course shortly. Having enjoyed a wonderful holiday in the Antrim coast area they are now planning another break for 2010.Meanwhile their hon. sec Mary O’Brien is celebrating her recent graduation in education.

Down in Kildimo the members of the Killulta ICA Painters Group are preparing for their art exhibition’Obair na mBan X ‘which will be officially opened on Thursday November 12th by ICA National President Anne Maria Dennison.
