Any organisation with the longevity of the ICA has much history, many stories to tell. Pictures to show and indeed accounts of what they've been involved in through the years. The ICA was a force for change for

on women in rural Ireland - past and present.

I am putting a call out to ICA members OR families of members for old photos of ICA members and events, the earlier the better (black and white),colour, Photos of action, involvement of women doing things, attending rallies or demonstrations. Perhaps there might be some old film of an ICA event gathering dust on a shelf? Id love to hear from anyone who has anything like this.

Centenary Art Exhibition ‘Comóradh Cead Bliain’

The launch of ‘Comóradh Céad Bliain’ Centenary Art Exhibition of Limerick Federation last week in Dooradoyle Library was a joyous occasion. There to cut the tape and pop the champagne was National President Anne Marie Dennison herself a member of Limerick Federation. Current Federation President Anne Gabbett of Mungret introduced all and indeed many former holders of this office were present including Marie Hayes, Nora Stapleton, Carol O’Keeffe and Joan Hayes.Members travelled from all parts to exhibit or support their colleagues. From Glin to Oola, from Castleconnell to Castlemahon and many places in between. Stories were told, anecdotes recalled and once again the foresight of those founder members wondered on.

If the ‘Centenary Art’ exhibition of the Limerick Federation could be re-titled, then ‘Joie de Vivre’ comes to mind. The works on show say much about the present status of the ICA, where preoccupations are now centered on the joy of living, if the eighty paintings on display are anything to go by. As National Prresident Anne Marie Dennison pointed out in her opening speech, the Limerick ladies art belongs to the zone of the timeless and their families into the future will glory in such as these art works on show. Joy in the world that surrounds us is the dominant theme on show and the interior world of imaginative delights is not far behind. Subject matter is as diverse as the participating artists who come from the slopes of Keeper and the plains between to the elevated plateaux bordering Cork and Kerry. Nothing of the beauty of nature is lost to the observant eyes of the Federation members of this ‘Fair Land’. The lofty heights overhead are given as much notice as the flora and fauna under their feet. Not surprising in recessionary times, a nostalgic look back to simpler times is evident in the portrayal of indigenous architecture and historical monuments. Onward ICA artists.!
