DROMBANNA BAGS AWARD

When it comes to recycling the ladies of the ICA are never found wanting and so it was when Craft Officer Patricia Cronin suggested making shopping bags from recycled materials excluding plastic. Attics and spare rooms were searched; friends and neighbours called on, even bins and skips were sourced. At the end of the day enough materials ranging from old curtains, table mats, woollen jackets that saw better days, even potatoe sacking was accumulated that could have made designer bags for the entire country. Judging was not easy but it was the Liberties that carried the day with Breda Flood’s wonderful creation achieving First Place.

COMÓRTAS GAEILGE

Such was the enthusiasm for this competition that some contestants insisted on reading an entire poem notwithstanding organiser Rita Horgan’s assurance
that bhearsa amháin would meet the case. Memories of school days fadó, fadó, came to mind with readings from Cill Chais, Mise Eire, Cúirt an Mhean Oiche, agus ‘An Ghaoth’but it was ‘An Gleann ‘nar tógadh mé ‘that won out ag deire lae. Once again the East Limerick Guild of Drombanna was in the winning enclosure, this time with Róis Ui Chonghaile accepting an bonn óir.

EASTER CARDS

There was no shortage of inspiration or ideas among the many entries received by Arts Officer Breege Murray for this obviously very popular competition.
If you’re on the ICA mailing list in the Knockfierna area one of these handmade cards could be coming your way at Easter time as Bridie Dunne’s entry from the Ballingarry Guild was the outright winner. Well done.

WRITER IN RESIDENCE

It was no surprise that Glenbawn native and well known writer and poet Peg Prendeville submitted the winning entry for the ‘Story of My Life’ competition.
A member of Ballyhahill/Loughill ICA, Peg, who is the welcoming presence in the County Library in Glin, has achieved many literary awards and a reading of some of her work, including excerpts from’What’s for dinner Ma? ’ is being arranged shortly.

BIDDY MULLANE PERPETUAL CUP

A perpetual cup in memory of the late Biddy Mullane, AdareICA has been presented to Limerick Federation by her family. Making the presentation at last week’s Federations Meeting her daughter Caroline O’Shea spoke of Biddy’s connection with the Irish Countrywomen’s Association in her native village for almost 65 years, her interest in crafts and all aspects of homemaking, and above all the friendships her mother made and retained over the years.
‘Go dtuga Dia luach a saothar do Biddy i Ríocht na bhflaitheas’
