THE STORY OF MY LIFE
By Peg Prendeville,

Ballyhahill/Loughill ICA

My life has been a story from darkness into light

But through it all I’ve never felt alone

My mother’s always cared for me, always held me close

I’ve felt her love deep inside my bones.

At first I was so tiny, smaller than a dot

I crept and crawled and moved around with ease

I explored all the corners, and blindly felt my way

Always knowing that with me Mam was pleased

As I started growing I amazed my self

There were arms and legs getting longer by the day

I needed far more space so I could stretch my limbs

I needed a bigger room so I could play.

And one day my mother said, “Ok, pet, it is time.

You need now to move on, make your own way.

In a bigger world you can map your own career

But I’ll be your loving mother every day.”

The journey was quite long through a tunnel dark and deep

But I was not afraid because I knew

That my mother was cheering for me with a smile upon her face

And my father was beside her, waiting too.

At last I saw the light and I came through with a surge;

Such light! such joy! such fuss they made of me

My own two loving parents held me close unto their cheeks

Today when I was born and, in this world, came to be.

So now, there you have it - the story of my life

All these nine months since I was conceived

You can’t be more surprised than me to know what lay ahead

This life I’ve found, I would not have believed.

But what joy it is to see this woman whom I’ve loved

All these months, as I slept beneath her heart

Together with my father; Oh! I am so very blessed

And hope, from them, I never will depart.
