May 2009 Fed Craft Officer Ann Baggott
Mainistir Na Féile
June 2009 Crecora at Gdn Party
It was the year Apollo II landed on the moon. The year was 1969 when none of them drank wine!!(or so the say), but instead they formed a branch of the ICA in Mainistir na Féile.
Many of the founders are still active members of Bantracht na Tuaithe and together with those who subsequently joined them over the years they recently have been celebrating in style. Their current president Rita Horgan, who
was the first guild Teachta is now Federation Teachta and of course the National President of the Irish Countrywomen’s Association Anne Maria Dennison also came from this famous stable.
Over the years they have been hosts to many notable guests , amongst those
entertained were representatives from the W.I. and members of the Countrywomen’s Association from Hohenloe,Germany.
A recent short break in Galway during the fine weather has whetted their appetites for more travel further afield ‘When the Hay is done and Kerry is bet’
We commend them on their successes and wish them well for the future.
An Grianán
Once again the Limerick week participants set out with a spring in their step to join with colleagues from Kerry and Leitrim for what was to be a
memorable week at An Grianán.Leading off this year was Helen Lane from Murroe under the watchful eye of Feenagh’s Pauline Power. At the finish Helen graduated with flying colours and has now got her pilots licence for steering the Limerick Week contingent. Among the guilds represented were Drombanna, Feenagh, Glin, Kileedy, Kilmeedy, Mainistir na Féile, Murroe, Mungret/St Pauls and Oola.A wide variety of courses was on offer but it was trips to historical houses and places of interest that was most sought after. Anna Costelloe of Glin gave a glowing report on their visits to Killineer House and Gardens, Oldbridge House, Brú na Bóinne, Millmount Museum and the cottage of poet Francis Ledwidge near Slane.
Anne Gabbett once again opted for Mountmellick work and is so enthusiastic about this craft that she proposes to organise a visit to its museum in that town showing various samples of the work. Anne may be contacted at (087) 6411656 should you wish to join her on her craft journey to Queens County.
Agricultural Shows
Opportunities for showing the fruits of your labour be it art, baking, jam making, craft work, flowers, vegetables etc is at the various Agricultural Shows taking place around this time. For a modest entry fee you could well be bringing home a rosette or two in the knowledge that your cherry cake or patchwork cushion stole the show. Local Shows around the county and adjoining areas are all taking place during July and August with the longest running Iverk Agricultural Show now in its 183rd year, in Piltown, Co Kilkenny during the beginning of September. Plenty of choices.
