Limerick Federation ICA Notes Week ending Sept29th

Limerick ICA Ladies assemble at Curraghchase for the walk to Stonehall

VISITING STONEHALL:-
On Saturday morning September 22nd The Ladies of Limerick ICA gathered in bright Autumn sunshine for a guided walk to the historic old village of Stonehall. Phyllis O Halloran , Federation President  and her husband Michael who was our guide for the walk were there to welcome us . Michael gave us a short history of The Wallers, Hunts and Taylors who occupied the lands over the years and then we walked up along past Stonehall House, and the remains of the old entrance arch to the Taylor Estate. We stopped at the site of the old village which contained 36 houses in 1840. The old doorways are still visible in the stone wall and there were eight shops which included shoemakers, tailors, carpenters and a publican. Across the way we took a look at an old cottage which is preserved for its bat population . Then we went on to the site of the church and stopped to look at The Barrack which is beautifully restored and occupied by a lovely young family .Mary Canty , Sports and Leisure Officer thanked Michael for the interesting talk and all went back to The Kilkornan Lodge for a cup tea and a chat.
BLACKBERRY PICKING :-
“ Ag piocadh sméara dubha “ You all remember writing the essay when we went back to school in September. While reading through some old recipes I was amused to read about “THE ESSENTIAL PONNIE” The ponnie went everywhere with you and a bigger can was placed on a safe spot on the ground. You picked blackberries into the ponnie by holding it directly under the branch and experienced pickers managed to use both hands for picking while still holding the ponnie. Filled ponnies were tipped into the can and the process repeated until the can was full to the rim.
Try this delicious recipe for Blackberry Ice Cream
12ozs (300g) sugar
1 tablespoon cornflour
½ pint (300ml) single cream
1pint (600ml) double cream
2eggs
1lb (400g) blackberries, cooked and sieved, plus 4ozs (100g) sugar
Put the sugar, cornflour and single cream in a double boiler and stir over hot water, then add half the double cream and when it has thickened a little over a moderate heat cook for 2mins longer. Beat the eggs and stir a small amount of this into the eggs and return it all to the saucespan. Cook 1min longer, stirring then take from the heat. Add the rest of the cream and the blackberry purée, which has been mixed with 4oz (100g) sugar.
Chill a little, pour into your container and freeze until partially frozen, then take out and remove from container and whisk until creamy in a chilled basin. Put back in the container and freeze for at least 8 hours. Serves 4 to 6. This ice cream will keep for months in the freezer.
